Crankshaft Position Sensor

Where is this thing located on the motor? I drive almost 200 miles per day and I definately don't want to get stuck that far from home with a bad sensor, not having another, and not knowing where its located on the engine. Its keeping my tach from working and if you try to give it throttle the tach will come back up and then the engine will start jerking like its getting the fuel cut off and back on real quick? ANY help would be nice thanks! Rodney.

Cps

It's on the side of the block behind the starter. You have to pull the starter & then you will see some wiring going to it. I believe you have to remove 1-2 bolts that hold it on the side of the block. It's a real PIA to get that thing to come out! Wiggle, wiggle, & wiggle some more & it will come out! I'm screaming a bit because that thing take PATIENCE!!! I was getting a little frustrated when doing mine but persistance did finally pay off.
After I removed the starter I probably spent 30 minutes or so before it finally came out. Just keep trying. You don't want to break that thing off inside your block.

Good Luck,
Clay

I'm not sure on a 97, but on my 04, that's the camshaft sensor. Alot of people get them confused. They're actually the same part # if you go to buy a new one.

On the 12 valves , there is no crank position sensor , just an engine speed sensor , and it is located on the front timing cover , right above the dampener pully.

Hmmmm....sumpin' strange goin' on here.

Unplugged the EZ. Left to do some errands...the light went out on the second start, and has not returned on two or three more starts.

Could this be an EZ related code?

Thanks to the help of Diesel Dan, we changed both my CPS and cam sensor yesterday. The CPS (behind the starter) was pretty easy....about 20 min. The cam sensor was a real pain! Cummins done a real good job hiding it under the VP44. We removed the air intake and the APPS assembly to get to it. Even then, it took a lot of manipulating to get it out and back in. We had to use extensions going under and kinda behind the VP 44 to get to it.

I know my CPS was bad, as code P0336 was setting almost daily. It didn't keep the truck from running, but you could sure tell something wasn't right. The engine sounded louder and there was some loss of power. While I was at Cummins Southern Plains, I decided to get both. The CPS was $37.40 and the cam sensor was $33.15. Dodge wanted $67.45 for the CPS and I didn't even price the cam sensor there. It took me less the two gallons of diesel to save about $60.
