Crank Pulley

My tach started bouncing around this morning on the way to work and after I got there I lifted the hood with the truck idling the harmonic balancer or crank pulley which ever looks like its about to wobble off. I tried to move it with my hand to see if it was loose and doesn't appear to be. Anyone ever had this problem?

I did a search and found a post talking about rubber coming out of the balancer, mine has some sticking out but looks like it was made that way. Yes, No, anybody know?

If the truck is a 5 speed, use a pry bar to see if you can move the crank back and forth. The thrust bearing my be shot.

I would hate to think that was the problem

The balancer is of two piece construction with a rubber spacer cast between the inner and outer rings. Once they start tossing the rubber it is time to replace them.

You may have to remove a pulley and belt to check the problem out. If you can get a clear shot at the harmonic damper itself with an inspection mirror see if the outer rim is separating or 'off kilter' with the center hub part. There is an elastometric/rubber filler between damper hub and rim and as mentioned it can separate. Not a hard fix if that's the case, but you'll probably need a harmonic damper puller to do the job. Being a diesel the new damper shouldn't be more than 4-5 times the cost of a comparable gas engine damper part.....

Yea it is loosing rubber how do you keep the crank from turning over on with automatic trans I got two of the four bolts loose but the other two are too tight and the crank keeps turning when I put alot of pressure on the pullhandle
