Computer problems, help please.
Re:Computer problems, help please.
I have had the same things happen to me recently. I also belong to a group of diesel guys named nwbombers (www.nwbombers.com), and the feds got real interested in hammering me with their IP traces everytime I logged in. It was stealing cpu cycles from my machine to deal with their snooping, so I now use ZoneAlarm and shut them out. (www.zonelabs.com) I figure their new anti-terrorist software simply picked up the naming and they got curious.

Re:Computer problems, help please.
I have tried everything and it is still slow. There was some dust inside but not bad. Actually, the CPU itself was surprisingly clean.
Haulin in Dixie, I can't find those protected and non protected files you mentioned. I do not have the full Norton package, only Norton antivirus 2002 with the latest software update. It does an automatic virus update check daily. Nowhere in the Norton stuff is there any place I can see about these protected files.
Anybody else any ideas?

Stan sorry if I led you astray. I thought that all of the current packages of Norton came with this setup. Mine has it and it will slow the computer down as you discribe if it gets too full. This generally happens if I go house cleaning and removing a bunch of files and programs. The Norton system will fix it by fixing a bunch of false shortcuts. Look in the Norton utilities if you have them and try running all the different utility fixes. I have had good luck with their Speed disk program. Takes a while to run, but even erases (washes) the empty space on the hard drive. Before I got the latest Norton my computer had gotten quite slow, and this fixed it. Another thing you can try that has helped mine is to download "Regclean" from the Microsoft board. I just looked, the Norton that I have is Norton System Works. At first I was afraid of it, but I have been real satisfied with it and will purchase an update when it is time. Cost fifty some dollars.

Re:Computer problems, help please.
Don't have Utilities, but maybe next time I go north I will see if I can find it on sale. I tried the Norton Help to see if there was anything on protected files, but nada. Checked with MS for Regclean and found it quickly but received a message that it was not available at this time. Frustrating!!!!!! I see a product advertised daily called PCpower scan. Supposed to clear up a bunch of problems and speed up my computer. Anybody know anything about this?
Thanks for trying anyway.

Mexstan, when you do the ctrl/alt/del did you click on performance and see how much of the ram was being used and it'll also show you the cpu useage. Also, what all programs do you have running in the back ground, added any new one lately? Maybe do a system restore to a date before the problems started. You also stated that one hd had 13gb and another had 30 something free, do you have 2 hd's pigy backed, if so, one may be trying to take a crap on you. If one is a slave, try unplugging it and see if it speeds up. I did a total re-install, went to XP over winme and mine would not shut down when told too, added another cdrw to be able to write more, deleted the old program and loaded the new one, because it could be used by either cdrw drive and shazam, it shuts down now. All else fails, I got a 1911 with 3 full clips and 5 new boxes of hollow points. I forgot to get the info on the welders today, we have so much going on at the shop and momma is car shopping (JUST BUY WHAT THE HECK YOU WANT), first it's a V8 Tundra, then a 4 dr FURD ( NO NO NO), now she has seen the 2004 Camry Solara, decked out, personally I WANT A HUMMER, but it's her car to drive, but think how much fun I could have with a H1, not a H2. I'll get the welder info and get back with you.
Re:Computer problems, help please.
Stan, I have had this problem and what I found was I had downloaded two other virus scaning deals, "spyware" and something else, anywho, I looked into where I stored them and found that they take up a TON OF MB! I wiped all that crap out and it runs much smoother now. I have had the full blown Nortin for a few years now and it is worth the money! I paid $39.99 after my $30.00 mail in rebate. Now I can "see" these little buggers when they try to get into my computor. They have failed mersifully!
... Other than large files and a outdated computor, not to sure. Maybe you are having server problems, that will kill me too.

Stan,
Have you checked your "startup" menu to see if you have something running in the background?
Go to the "run" command and type in "msconfig". You can pick what programs you want to run when your PC boots up.
Good Luck,

Re:Computer problems, help please.
I have watched my CPU usage and it ranges from 0% to about 4%. Once in a while for a second or two it goes way up but drops very fast. Memory usage from what I can see has never gone over about 40%. Have not added any new programs lately. All I can remember doing was installing the latest MS patch.
I don't have two HD's. Just one and it is partitioned. I use the C for programs and the D for my daily stuff. So far never had any problems with this setup.
I have considered going back about a week and doing a system restore but am reluctant to do that.
Forget how to check for what is running in the background. Does it make any differance if my computer is set to optimize the performance for "applications" or "background services"?
No hurry on the welder stuff as I am not buying tomorrow.
Curt, I have Spybot and it is only 607 bytes. I also have AdSubtract (presently disabled) and it is 571 bytes. So that can't be the propblem.

Hey, don't want to do that just yet as it is not even two years old yet. I know, I know, in computer years it is a dinasour. Actually, the new ones still can't do much more than this one can. I had it built to last.
Computer freak? Does that mean a nerd?
Crabtex, repeatedly tried 'run' and 'msconfig'. Got a message telling that it could not find that file or one of it's componants.

Re:Computer problems, help please.
I found a couple of good programs on the Webattack.com website. One is called Easycleaner and it takes care of invalid Keys in the registry. Really speeds up your machine when you get rid if invalid keys from old programs or I found that ICQ and Winzip give alot of invalid key entries. Its freeware.
It worked for me...
BTW I use Norton Security as well. Great product, the firewall is a must and I also have a D-Link hub with a hardware firewall.

Stan, I don't know what OS your running, but you should be able to go to your main screen and click "START". When the menu comes up, click on "RUN". If all goes well, a box will come up in the bottom left cornor of the screen. In the box beside "open", type in "msconfig" and click OK. "STARTUP" should be one of the option boxes.
Also, when was the last time you did a "disk cleanup"? Windows puts a lot of stuff in the "temporary internet" folder that takes up a lot of space and can cause your system to slow down. In case you don't know, go to "all programs" then "accessories" then "system tools" then "disk cleanup". It will give you the option of which drives you want to clean up. "C" drive is where you will find most of the junk. It will give you the option to look at the files before you delete them.
I don't know if any of this will help....but it's something to try.

Re:Computer problems, help please.
I'm pretty sure msconfig wasn't included with Win2K Pro.
There is another program that accomplishes the same thing, but for the life of me I can't remember what it is.
There is a freeware program called Startup Cop you can try.
I think I've used it on my machine to stop things from loading on startup.
It works pretty much the same as msconfig.
You can see what is loading up, temporarily stop stuff from loading, then if you're happy, permanently stop them from loading.

Upgrade to Windows XP.
I had no problems with Win 98 SE, but when I built my new PC I had to upgrade to XP to take full advantage of my 2.4 Pentium and the 512K of memory. I wasn't sure I liked XP at first, but after using it awhile, I've learned to appreciate some of the things it does to keep problems from happening. And....there are a few things I don't like about it.
I know nothing about Win2kPro.
Good Luck Stan,
