Computer problems, help please.
Grrrrrr. My computer is driving me nuts. Two days ago it suddenly got very slow. It happened after the first start of the day. It has slowed to a crawl and I can't find out why. My Norton virus checker is automatically updated daily and I have done three complete system virus checks. One in safe mode. Nothing found. I have done two Spybot searches and cleared what it found. Have cleared the cache and the temporary files. Have done a cont/alt/del, and looked in the task manager to see if anything is going on that should be not be working and everything looks fine. Have AdSubract and disabled that with no difference. Also when scrolling in DTR it has suddenly occasionally done something wierd. When I scroll down to the top or bottom of the page and let up on the mouse it will snap back to mid page. The only way to stop this is to get out of that page and go back in.
Any other suggestions?

Not sure on the slowing down, but the page snapping back after you let go of the mouse I've experienced.
Started within the last week.
Seems to happen when I've been using the wheel on the mouse to scroll down,
then I switch to sliding the scroll bar.
If I roll the scroll wheel back and forth it seems to fix it.
Kinda acts like the wheel is stuck mid sensor.
Seems to only happen here on DTR.
Maybe Jack is trying some new code?
Also have Win2K Pro with IE 6.0.2800.1106
Microsoft IntelliEye Laser Wheel Mouse.

The snapping back only happens on DTR so far. Hope not to see it elsewhere. Glad to hear that I am not the only one.

I have shut it down and restarted at least 10 times since this darn problem started. No change.

My computer bogs down when a lot of garbage accumulates so I use Norton Cleansweep frequently. Also Norton Checkup finds and deletes a lot of register errors and false program shortcuts. Defrag helps a little also.
The most common reason computers suddenly change character like yours is they run out of memory, either RAM or disk.

Re:Computer problems, help please.
Have not done a defrag for a week or so but will do one now. Have 512 RAM. On my C drive have 13GB free space and on my D drive have 36 GB free, so don't see that as a problem.
Thanks for the suggestions.

Stan, I have a solution,
1) go to you toolbox and get your biggest ball pein hammer
2) commence fixing computer
3) clean up mess
4) go outside and change your oil

Almost at that point. Did a defrag and found almost nothing wrong. Have a 5 pound regular hammer. Will that work instead of the ball pein?

Stan you may have already done this, but make sure you have deleted the protected files and the non protected in the trash can. I have had this happen from too much in the Norton protected trash.

Re:Computer problems, help please.
No, have not done that. Now this is interesting. Found 169 items in the recycle bin. Most of them .jpg files. When I tried to delete them I got a message telling me "Cannot delete file: Cannot read from the source file or disc".
I have never seen this before. Tried deleting all at once and then a few one by one. Same message each time. Now what? Also have never deleted the protected and non protected files in the trash can. How do I do this? Do they show when I go to my recycle bin?

Re:Computer problems, help please.
After failing to delete the files in my recycle bin I got out of it. Later I went back in to try again and found that all files had been deleted. There was nothing in the recyle bin any more. Huh????????? So restarted my computer and find that it is a bit faster.

Mexstan: With lots of my customers the problems you describe come from dirty CPU coolers. The computer will reduce speed if it senses overheating. Usually I just open the case and blow them out with shop air (careful that it's oil free and dry)
Sometimes the dust will also do intermittant shorts on the mainboard.

AlpineRam, good point. With 4 fans in my computer it sucks a lot of air. Will remove the cover and clean it out later today. Actually was thinking a few days ago that I need to do this again anyway. I use a vacuum for the initial cleaning, then turn it around and blow out the rest. Works well for me.
Re:Computer problems, help please.
Stan if you have the full Norton package on the computer, right click on the trash icon. You will get a menu that has both regular trash and protected trash. Have it delete both sets of files. Then run the one button clean up and fix. Seems that there is a limit to what it will hold and I have gotten into the situation where it took a minute or two for each command. This has cleared it up.
