common rail wont start- help!

i posted in 3rd gen forum also. my uncles 04 cr wont start. the other day he had to crank along time to get it started- never gave him trouble before. it finally started so he takes to dealer-they replace lift pump ? he goes to get it, itwont start. now they say it needs new injectors-for $4300! ithink he,s getting screwed. i think the problem is something else. i can change 12v and 24v injectors as fast as anyone but ive never looked at a commnrail. if it really is injectors i think with some advice i can find him used stockers and change them. i still think the problem is different. any help appreciated, thanks

Check battery connections, drivers side battery ground goes to ECM on side of engine. Make sure connection is tight and clean if not ECM will not get proper ground. What codes did they pull? Read this TSB and ask for test results to confirm they diag your truck properly. Sounds like they are just throwing expensive parts on it.

It will crank over but the ECM will not power up if 12 volts is not seen at the ECM. Also make sure the electric fuel pump in tank is running when you first bump the starter over. You should hear it running when you take off fuel fill cap. FCA is fuel control actuator it is located on the high pressure fuel pump. It control fuel pressure to the rail. If you are getting fuel to CP3 pump and the ECM is powering up. Then most likely fuel pressure is not high enought in rail. Could be injector tube leaking or pressure limiting valve leaking. There are tests that need to be done to check out these parts. Before condemning the injectors.

If the engine cranks over fast, then it is something else. Try disconnecting the drain line from the top of the pressure relief valve and crank it over and have someone watch if any diesel is coming out. There should not be any leakage at this point. If it is leaking, then that could be the reason for the common rail to bleed down.
Another test you could do is pull the electrical plugs on the back of the CP3 and see if it will start. Don't try to drive it with plugs disconnected as this is just a test.
I really doubt if ALL the injectors require changing. To me, it sounds like the dealer is a parts changer and just guessing at the true cause of the problem at your expense.

I don't know about you, but our local Dodge dealer knows bupkus about diesels. Maybe you should take it to a diesel specialist, if they aren't qualified.
