Cold Morning....10 Degrees......

This morning was a cold one in Spokane, about 10 Degrees. I cannot plug in because I am in an apartment but did cycle the heaters 2x. After I started it, there was a funny "humming" vibration that came from under the hood and could be felt in the wheel. It got louder so I shut it down. After I started back up I realized that it might be the PS pump and straightened the wheel. After pulling out it did it for a short time when turning.

Fluid level is fine.

Can anyone tell me if this sounds familiar?

Thanks,
Tom

Re:Cold Morning....10 Degrees......

The same thing happens to me on cold mornings (Minnesota). The power steering fluid is the only thing I haven't changed to synthetic fluid yet. I'm hoping that will eliminate the problem. Maybe someone else has already tried it.

Re:Cold Morning....10 Degrees......

It should be the PS fluid - mine does it until it warms up on both my gas truck and my CTD. The colder it gets the louder and longer it will squall. I haven't tried synthetic, but I'm told that will eliminate most of the yowling the pump does. Hope that helps!

The other thing to remember in really frigid weather for us Auto Tranny types is to let it warm up in Neutral so the trans fluid can get circulated also.

Re:Cold Morning....10 Degrees......

Mine howls any time it gets below 40* :'(. I cant imagine what it would act like in 10* ( Doesn't happen much here in Texas). It stops afer it warms up. I cant afford to put Synthetic in account of my massive hydra boost leak .
