clutch or transmission?
clutch or transmission?
When my clutch went out 60,000 ago the center of the disc came apart. The symptom was that it would not release and then broke. I have a new problem coming. It is very hard to get into first or reverse sitting still. The rest of the gears go in easy, just first and reverse. Seems that if the clutch was not releasing that it would not want to go inany gear. Does this sound like the clutch or is the trans finally going?
Re:clutch or transmission?
Haulin,
I have had the same symptom on some of the old trucks I drove years ago, and it was usually related to clutch wear. The clutches used to be adjustable, but I haven't had that happen in the last few I've owned. You might try getting the clutch adjusted at a spring & clutch shop (not the dealership). HTH.
Re:clutch or transmission?
mine was doing that, when they pulled the old clutch to put in my southbend the release bearing was almost siezed (it was all crunchy when you turned it........
it doesn't do it anymore with my new clutch
oh yeah, the hydrualic clutches on these trucks are not adjustable .......

Re:clutch or transmission?
Have you checked the hydraulic fluid and the slave? Perhaps you are not getting enough clearance for first and second, but things are ok withthe synchro gears.
Try putting the truck into second from a dead stop.
Just worth trying.
george
Re:clutch or transmission?
Haulin ;
It could be a pilot bearing or a brokin spring in the pressure plate.
I had a Centerforce that did that from the gitgo. It was an intermitting prob. sometimes it would be hard to git in gear [ 1st & reverse ] . And it would always be at the worst times.
I did not find any other prob other than the Centerforce clutch set was the prob.
It finally broke the center out of the disc. I called Centerforce and they would not take care of it.
There are 12 others around here doing the same.
I replaced it with a South Bend and have not had aprob yet.
I put it in in Oct. of 2002.
Good Luck in finding your prob
I hope it's simple to fix.

: Eddie : 8)

Haulin in Dixie -
Been there, saw the movie... wasn't good.

Does your clutch "stick" after sitting overnight, or when cooled down after highway run?
Does truck try to move foward (lurch slightly) when going into 1rst gear (clutch fully in)?
P.M. me for more details if interested...
-Scott
Re:clutch or transmission?
Haulin, sounds alot like the symptoms of a clutch not releasing all the way.

Had a '99 F450 that did the same thing, when it was basically brand new!!

Anyway, it was o the dealer probably 5 times and had a new master cylinder etc. installed for the clutch. (then they couldn't get the air out of the system and it did the same thing :
)

I'd bet on clutch troubles there anyway. I wish they had the old manual linkage system and you could adjust. >

Re:clutch or transmission?
Update, I just put a few thousand miles on the truck. Most of the time it is ok, sometimes it is hard to get in first and reverse. Sitting still it is never hard to get into any other gear so I doubt that it is the clutch not releasing. I received the new sbe a day or two ago. Will install it and the six speed as soon as possible. The truck now has 176,000 on it so I can't complain too much with the weight that I haul.

Thrust bearing may be bad too. Clutch disc likely to be worn at outside edge. Just a guess though...
-Scott
