check engine light, no charging

hello. I have read in the past that you can use an external voltage regulator on the first gens.
can someone post the link to the Napa part number and a diagram to hook it up...? thanks in advance.

I can troubleshoot from there.
I appreciate all of your help.

wow, I am the first guy here to actually get ZERO replies in the "emergency help" section... thats got to be worth something.

it was quite simple to find the thread after some searching. however I was interested in hearing what others recommend on which type of external regulator to use. but Ill post that later.

the problem turned out to be my "Mean Green" alternator wasnt so very mean after all, so the old OEM unit goes back in for now.

Acting?

How was your alternator acting before it went out? On start up my gauge will fluxuate badly until it has ran awhile. Anyone else have this problem?

Preheater

Another post more accurately described my issue. Come to find out that mine is the Preheater cycling prior to warmup. The way mine goes is the same as was described as when the engine is cycling to preheat, as that is the only time that is does it, cold cold starts.

Thanks Ben

You are better off posting any 1st gen questions in the 1st gen section. More traffic in there from people who know your truck.
