check engine light!

On cold mornings,(below freezing), truck feels like it running out of fuel. I checked the code with my superchips programmer the code is p0216 inj. pump timing. Does anyone know what could be causing this?....Oh by the way I have a 99 2500 4x4.

From what I hear, that code is a mechanical failure (having not happened to me... yet) and seldom bodes well. What is your fuel pressure during idle and under acceleration? My lift pump got weak about four weeks ago when it first started getting cold at night. Fortunately, I caught it with the gauge before any damage could be done to the IP.

Would the truck run right after it warms up if something was wrong with the ip. After the truck warms up I don't experience the surging or power loss.

i was told that if the lift pump loses power that code will come up, but it's more likely your injection pump is toast

Yuck! That is a bad code. Do you have fuel pressure gauge?
The typical cause for this (I am trying to summarize common knowledge here) is the inability of the Bosch VP44 injection pump to achieve the required timing. This is often thought to be caused by the lack of fuel supplied to the VP44 by the lift pump. The stock lift pump is a weak point of the design and tends to fail often, hence people install fuel pressure gauges on 2nd gen trucks to monitor the lift pumps.

better get a fp reading quick! I would bet the lift pump is toast. SOMETIMES a bum lift pump will trip that code....maybe 20% of the time. most often it is a vp44 biting the dust.

goodguy, a quick and very easy way to get a FP gauge on the truck is just get one from Oreilly's that will thread into the top of your fuel filter canister - no messing with plumbing lines or installing the gauge in the cab. You won't be able to get under-load readings, but you can get idle and when revving the truck. I think the accepted knowledge is if you're idling at 5 or 6, the lift pump can't supply the IP under driving conditions. When mine went out I started the truck, put it in gear and the FP reading dropped to 5, I let it lope into the yard and quit driving.
