check engine light on 12valve

bwat4 I have a california emmisined 12valve. The check engine light came on yesterday. I was driving very slow due to the adaverse weather conditions and all of a sudden the light comes on. I immeidiatly pulled off the road and check all the vital fluids, which seemed to be fine. What are the diffrent systems monitered by the computer? Should I just take it somwhere and have it checked?

Any problems identified by the check engine light are recorded and stored as fault codes. They can be accessed with no tools by following the instructions here-

Will this still work even though he has a 97???

"This procedure works for the 94-96 12 Valve engines. The 97-98 12 valve and the ISB all require the DRB diagnostic tool to obtain trouble codes. "

Was it the water in fuel light that maybe came on.

If so it may have picked up moisture from the adverse weather conditions.

I think that may be a typo on dodgeram, as far as I know only '98 12 & 24 valves and '99 24s require a code reader.

in 1996 all auto makers went to a obd II computer sys, before that it was a obd I, to get code from a obd II you need a scan tool of some sort, and to clear the codes out, hope this helps

You can still read the codes on everything except '98 & '99 with the key off/on trick, you can't clear them though.
