Changed fuel filter-no start, I know, I know!
Changed fuel filter-no start
DESPARATE! I've been six hours on this now! Got a boat poker run in two hours and still a no start! I've got good lift pump, (fuel at vp44, top of filter and at injectors). Cracked 1,3,4 got good fuel. BTW, changed filter cause it was time. (Never do that again before a big day!) Is there anything I'm missing? I've searched the board, read all the threads, did all that stuff.
Thanks!!

did you leave the filter housing loose and turn the key to run till it bled fuel? after it fills the filter housing and overflows a bit, tighten the filter top in place, If you did all this, make sure you did not pinch the gasket allowing air to be drawn in, if it looks pinched, grab the old gasket and re use it if it looks 100% but be carefull this is your last spare gasket.........
Update: Got a couple of more hours in on it, bleeding the injectors. Finally I got tired of messing with it and squirted a tiny shot of ether into it. Fire up, and died. Started it again, and it fired right up, sounded great! I let it idle for ten minutes, then killed it. No start again, doesn't even try...just cranks!
Check engine light on, so pulled these two codes :P1689 and P1693. Did a search, and found that the 1689 code is no comm between fuel sys and ecm. Cleared the code, disconnected the battery. No start. No codes.
This started as a fuel filter change, and looks like something else now. Any ideas?

Got a bad feeling the VP-44 is dead or at least marginal. The no communication is bad word. Without comm the VP can't function properly. This is often accompanied by a Crank position sensor code 0235 I think. I don't think the CPS is bad it just can't be read by the ECM so it says it is bad. Sometimes it shows sometimes not. Many cases have happened just as yours.
Do check the filter gaskets to make sure they were not nicked on install. If It ran for ten minutes you must have gotten some fuel but it may be arriated. (with air) due to a leak. See what mikmaze says. Good advise and it may get you going temporarily.

Thanks vzdude, that's where I'm heading.
I'm thinking now that's it's not a fuel issue at all. When it ran, it ran great. No stumbling, coughing, nothing. Just smooth idle for ten minutes. Revved it time or two also. Sounded great.
Here's what I'm thinking now. The reason I changed the filter was this: I ran low on fuel Friday, not out, just low. Then a couple of times it took more than the usual time to crank it. So, I'm thinking it pulled some trash into the filter and clogged it. Now I'm thinking I had an electronics issue. (The procedure I used to change the filter was the same as I'd used before, I think I probably cleared the air out after ten minutes. But the VP44/ECM issue jumped up and would not allow a start.)
When I shot the ether in, it fired up (bypassed the "start" programming on the electronics?). Then I killed, and it wouldn't start again. (And threw the codes.)
I disconnected the batteries again, and have left it overnight. We'll see if that clears it up. I might also suck the Hypertech programming out and put the old programming back in. Maybe the malfunction is in that part of the programming.

Without a fuel pressure guage you have no idea if you have a good LP or not.
Get an 1/8" 0-30 FP guage and install it in the top of the fuel filter housing, and bump the starter. You should have at least 12PSI, if not replace the LP.
If your truck ran before you removed the filter (broke into the fuel system) then it is not the VP. If it ran for 10 mins then you shut it off and it would not start, the VP is good. It doesn't have fuel pressure to the VP.
Are you sure you don't have any air leaks into the system when you changed the fuel filter?

Listen to Geico....hes giving you very good advice here. Even if your lift pump isnt the problem...it is still advice that you should follow.
Running a second gen 24V without a fuel pressure guage in the cab is just asking for a $1500 repair bill.

Im not sure....getting a quantitative number for the fuel pressure sure would be a good place to start.
Im wondering if there isnt something going on with your pickup tube in the tank....
Do you have fuel at the injectors? (If the injectors are cracked, make sure you use cardboard or a rag around the injectors - do NOT put your hands anywhere near there). How long did you bleed them for? Seems like it might be airlocked? Does the truck run at all? Have you doublechecked the filter housing to make sure its not letting air in?

Dr Evil, thanks for your reply. Please read my previous posts: The engine ran great, plenty of fuel at the VP, the injectors, etc. Smooth idle, revved it several times, drove it around my driveway. No problems at all until I turned the key off. Tried to restart, no joy.
