Change Filter, No Starty...........

So here I am, supposed to be leaving in one hour for 1,200 mile trip to pick a horse up and haul back here......

Figure I'll change the oil, grease everything up and perform the regular routine maintenace....

While I'm at it I'll throw in a new fuel filter eh????

So I drop thye new filter in, tighten everything up, turn the key on bump the starter several times to fill the cannister like always, and then try to start... Nothing.

won't start.

crack the bleed screws, no fuel at all, take the cannister off it's bassically empty.

My Lift pump is done right???

I'm a little mad at myself right now as I t y to regularily check the pressure with my manual gauge, I checked it about christma and had 13 # which only exemplifies the need for an in cab gauge. I just sent the G.F for a new lift pump in town.

I also talked to a Cummins tech after I tried completely removing the fliter housing and running the pump. No fuel comes out... he said that was a bad idea and that no fuel would pump that way anyhow?????
I can't understand why not.

so I need advice as to whether my lift pump is actually dead or I screwed something up..... maybe I just bite the bullet, put the new lift pump on and carry on. I really had planned to upgrade to a better system when this pump died (FASS etc.)

advice pls...........

thanks all.

Well, my pumps death was similar. Started it up in the driveway and the engine shut down. That was it. LP had just up and died. I'd change the LP and add a fuel pressure gauge. Don't spend the money on the VP44 till it is completely dead.

If you cycled the lift pump several times and the filter canister is still empty, I say your lift pump is TOAST.

This is why a FULL time fuel pressure gauge should be the FIRST addition to any 24 valve Cummins truck.
It's far better to see pattern of low pressure and change the pump, than to find out it might have croaked sometime in the last several thousand miles.

So I immediately call local Major chain parts supplier for new lift pump, "yep we have it in stock".

Drive 1/2 hour each way to get it, (well...... G.F does anyway) and find that they sent me an old mechanical pump like for a 12 valve.

Even when I returned it they insisted it was the right part

Luckily I had a spare lift pump off a FL80 Freightliner, threw that on and away she went. No problems.

Thanks. Dondi
