Burnt Tranny fluid? auotmatic

heres the quickie. Mothers BF changed her tranny fluid and decided that he didnt need to fill it all the way up. She drove it for a day and called me asking what was wrong with her truck, Basically at stop lights if "falls out of gear" revs it up and wala its off again and drives fine so she says. I came up and it was about 3 quarts low not to mention HUGE leak under the truck. All anyone has ever told me is smell really. Im a diesel tech so we dont come across auto trannies all so often. Is there a color diffrence? Or what kind of odor will it have? maybe have someone else smell it. I just wanna make sure they didnt screw this up as i just put a new converter in it 12k ago

hi
save youre self a breakdown .
try to pinpoint the leak so you can for sure correct it !

drain it agin and go to wall mart and get the atf+4 and fillter and do it right !
this will also flush it out with a second change .

check the band adj .

clean the pan and magnet !

if he cant get this siimple job done right dont let him touch it agin !
he may have not installed corect fluid anyway !

i am using the wallmart atf+4 and a transgo tfod-desiel vb kit , my truck has got 280,000 miles on it and it shifts perfect! stock converrtor !

hi
you want 5/16 -3/8 allen wrench to pass between the front band apply lever and the piston rod when you hold the lever firmly in the clamped position with your fingers .
5/16 should pass throuugh easily an a 3/8 should be too tight to pass through !

rear band you want 3/8-7/16 travel of the lever from band open to band closed . no way to get a wrench in there !
