Black oil in power steering pump?
Black oil in power steering pump?
Noticed oil on the bottom of the truck and traced it to the PS resevior which was full to the top with BLACK ENGINE OIL!! @ 1 year ago I put on a new PS pump and in line filter and @ 6 mths ago I rebuilt my vacuum pump. There are no signs from the outside that the vacuum pump is leaking so maybe it's an interal leak??? Could this be the cause and if so what other parts might be damaged and should I just buy a new vacuum pump/PS pump?
Sorry for the double post but I've got to get this thing fixed ASAP!!!

Mine was too. There was a thread somewhere that showed many truck of our age that could have had a wrong fill from the factory!
I just siphoned some out, refilled with new synthetic, drove it a day or two and repeated. It has been fine.
Mine smelled like gear lube and was the same weight!

Yeah, it's crazy. The fluid has a strange smell to it but I did use my Mighty Vac and sucked it all out and replaced it with synthetic. I put new synthetic in when I did the vacuum pump a couple of months ago and can't figure out what's going on now. I guess time will tell. I looked at all the lines going to the pump and none have anything to do with engine oil except the vacuum pump and I have no idea how that could be the culprit. This is a true head scratcher.
