Big Trans Oops!!! Help!!!!
Big Trans Oops!!! Help!!!!
Ok, so today I was changing the filter and fluid on my 47re and decided to adjust the bands at 68k miles. I drained the pan and everything, but then when I started adjusting the front band, I realized I was tightening the bolt to 72 FT/LBS instead of 72 INCH/LBS!!!!! On my way to that torque I heard a bad sound, somewhat of a loud ping. I realized I was using the wrong increments, backed it off and re-torqued the band and backed it off the correct amount of turns. The rear band went fine and I filled the trans back up and all seemed well. NOW, when I drive the truck it doesn't seem to want to shift into second. It hangs in first and revs out unless I let off and then it will shift. It goes through all the gears fine except for that. SO THE QUESTION IS... WHAT DID I BREAK!!!!!?????!!!?????
Probably shifts to second if you let off the accel. Either way you'll learn how to remove your valve body now. Should be pretty obvious what you did when you get in there. IF you just bent the strut you got off easy.
Ok, no second gear. Took it apart following directions found on here.... found piece of something in the pan, apparently it was the band strut. Unfortunately, after removing the VB I found that I broke the cast piece that pushes on the band and completely destroyed the band strut. Is there a way to remove the cast pivot piece with the trans in the truck??? From what I saw it looks like the converter would have to be removed to get the pin out. Any help is appreciated! Here is a pic of the band strut. Hopefully you guys get a good laugh out of my stupidity!
If your talking about the lever that the strut sits in, you have to remove the tranny and TC to pull the pin so that it will fall out. The pin is held in by an allen head cap in the front of the tranny. You still got extremly lucky you didn't hurt the 2nd gear band.
Sorry about your luck man.

Ok. Truck is bad together and works. Luckily, only part of the cast was broken and it still holds the band strut in. I think it will be going in for a rebuild this coming week. But atleast the truck is working for now. Thanks guys.
