Auto tranny
Auto tranny
I have a friend with a 98 Dodge 1/2 ton 3.9 V6 and a 42re tranny. When cold it shifts back and forth between 1st and 2nd gear. After the truck warms up the problem goes away. The problem is only happening on mornings below 70.
The tranny was rebuilt 7 months ago, when it didn't want to shift out of 2nd gear until you drove about 3 miles.
I know this is not a cummins but it is a Dodge.

I had the same issue when I had my tranny replaced - this lasted for maybe 2K miles - when it was cold, no shifting, or it would not engage in gear AT ALL; You might try warming up the transmission while you warm up the truck - put it in neutral while you're idling, it sure helped with my shifting issues.
Yours was rebuilt? I assume it was a reputable shop, have you ran this by them yet?
