Question Another codes problem

Hey guys, I know I'm new here so please forgive me if I ask a common question.

First, here's the issue. My truck has the check engine light lit. About half the time while driving (50 mile commute) my tach will just drop out. Falls to zero. When this happens, I loose probably half my horsepower. My mechanic said my truck gave these codes in three tests. I showed different codes on every test.

1st run p0219

2nd run p0341

3rd run p1693 and p1698

I think I need a new PCM, my mechanic isn't sure but he asked I look around on the web and find out what I can. He's a friend of mine that I trust, so he's wants me to help diagnose the problem to save on shop time.

Any thoughts? Thanks!

Look here -> https://www.dieseltruckresource.com/...n&onlynewfaq=1

Sounds like a cam or crank sensor going out.

This is a typical symptom of a Crank position sensor going south. It is around $75 from the dealer and is located on the block just behind the starter. Not a big deal to change but you do need to pull the starter to access it. When mine went, it threw codes off and on for about a month before the tach finally dropped to 0 and then came back. I would just replace it first and I'll bet the problem will go away. Computers do go bad but not that often and cost a lot more money. The 1693 codes are companion codes to let the tech know that there is a code set in the pcm.
Let us know if this solves the problem.

Ok, here's a real head scratcher. I ordered a new crankshaft position sensor (CKP) for my truck. I printed out the detailed instructions from DTR (see below)

http://www.dodge-diesel.org/articles/cps/ckp.htm

We put my truck up on the lift, and where there SHOULD be a CKP, there is a steel plate with one bolt. The specs say I should have a sensor there, but I don't have one there, just a plate and bolt. So now I'm wondering, where the heck is the CKP for my 2001, 2500 4x4 quad cab? It's not where it's supposed to be (according to the literature). The sensor that NAPA sold me is indentical to what cattle hauler has described in his post, but there's nothing behind my starter.

Any good ideas? Heck, I'll even settle for some bad ideas at this point.

Thanks.

I guess that answers the question as to what year they went from a dual sensor system to just the one sensor.

The other sensor in question is somewhere around the VP44 (I think).

Crank sensor was down underneath by the starter, cam sensor must be up top?
