New to the Forums and am having troubles on my 98.5 2500 5.9l CTD. im having problems with the truck shifting between 2nd-3rd gear will only shift correctly when cold and shift when im going about 30mph and let off the throttle pedal, even that doesnt work sometimes and have to shift into neutral and back into drive in order for it to shift into 3rd. the other problem is that its not locking into overdrive, it shifts into 4th but no overdrive. trans temp is below 140F and at normal operating temp, but still no overdrive. i have replaced the APPS with a new one and reset it to the pcm or ecm. Also throwing a P1693 code, im running an edge fuel controller. i have an obd reader and have cleared all codes but that particular one remains the same. Anyone have any ideas what to do next. Trans fluid drained last summer, new filter adjusted rear banding. Possible overdrive Solenoid? Any help much appreciated..

 

converter also rebuiit around 110k. shift kit also installd at same time as converter was put back in.

 

Check the relay in the box under the hood. Just swap it with the a/c relay. The only time I lost OD in the 2000 the relay was bad. The tranny shifted funny and wouldn't lock the T/C. This is the cheepest thing to check and don't cost anything.

There is a thrust washer and snap ring that holds the overdrive in place.
I hate to say that you are probably going to find pieces of it in your pan.

 

You can replace the pressure governor and solenoid for around $100. I got mine from a place called transmissionpartsusa. The dealership in my town was way high priced (redundant I know). That did the trick in my truck when it was refusing to shift 2-3 and 3-4. However, if I remember correctly when I did get it to shift gears, it went into overdrive fine?

Good luck. If you do go the above website way, have a look at your the govenor and solenoid first, the description of mine was for an incorrect year, esp. as your truck is a mid-year.

 

i am having the same problem! mine runs way out in second gear and the only way it will shift is to ease off the accelerator then it shifts fine. it goes into OD but kicks up and down sometimes. i have heard to replace the two sensors on the valve body but dont know the part number. does anybody know the numbers for a 1998.5 2500?
