97 2500 auto trans NEED HELP!

Hello.

I have a 97 Dodge ram 2500 5.9L TD and it has a auto trans, well 2 days ago my wife goes for reverse (from a dead stop parked) and hears a little winding/ grinding noise, put the truck back into park then goes for reverse again this time with no noise but no reverse aswell. Tody I pull the pan to find this what looks like used to be round snap ring or something that is broke in 5 pieces but looks to be missing a piece or 2 and and seems its about 4 1/2 inchs around,. Can anyboy tell me what this is and where in the trans it goes? I ordered a rebuild kit but from the looks of it this part does not come with it. I ordered a tans book aswell but wont be here for about a week and would like to order this part so I have all my bottles lined up before I shoot at it. Thanks, David

well looks like you might need one of them things called a specialist. that looks like a retainer for the clutch packs, but thats just my best guess. the smae thing happend to mine, resulted in 3k worth of repairs...

see thats just it, I have called and went to just about every trans shop local to me and none of them know, so if they dont know I dont trust them. Iam going to tackle the rebuild myself but cant do so till the tools (spring compressor for the 47re) and book to help me thru come in.

alright i know very little abut the dodge transmission, i had a local shop rebuild it for me, well lets say my dad made me have a local shopp do it when i could have got a goerend for 250 more dollars!!!! in the rebuild kits i have looked at on suncaost and such i remember seeing those clips in ther with the clutch packs and such, so i guessed, i honestly was just swiinging for the fence in that one.... If you have the money i would suggest ordering a built trans, form suncoast, geoerend, or dtt or even ats... if you order a goerend with their single disc converter it wont be 3grand... prbly about 2500 or so...

I only use the truck to tow my 24oo lbs race car every now and again, but, for the most part its back and fourth to work. I think I found the part and it makes me mad I have to tear a hole trans down for 3 dollars! but ohwell atleast it will be freshened up.

think this is it? mine (broken one) has some wavyness to it so I think this is it.

Send a pm to Mcmopar. He will tel you what it is, but your probably right anyways. If you have to tear it down that far, then it's a good time to wake up a tired tranny. Good luck

the direct clutch snap ring is about 7 in. wavey and known failure . you can replace it with a flat one from the forward clutch. it is also a selective thickness ring to set clutch clearance.and no it is not part of an overhaul kit.

it is a little cofusing the way dodge named the clutches. the 7" direct clutch is is the front of the trans. the other one is actualy called the OVERDRIVE DIRECT and is 5 1/2". if it came from the od direct you can just pull the ext. housing and fix it, you will need the alinment shaft and spring compressor tools. if either of the direct clutchs fail you will not have reverse but if the DIRECT clutch is the one you will not third gear. the OD DIRECT is in play in reverse, engine braking and assistis the sprag in fwd.
