'96 2500 4x4 auto problem shifting from 2 to 3
Howdy,
I posted several times about my shifting problems. I was wrong, I said that the problem was shifting from 3rd into od. Duh, it finally hit me the other day that it is not shifting from 2nd to 3rd. Seems to be electrical. If I turn the key off and then back on it will then shift. It will drop out and stay in second when I'm going slow and have to do the key reset again, All help greatly appreciated. Just had the Dodge dealer do a tranny fluid flush and filter, that didn't seem to help. I'v replaced the small ice cube relay in the relay panel on the firewall that didn't fix it either. Does the '96, 12 valve have a APPS and would resetting it help? Thanks
warden
Re:'96 2500 4x4 auto problem shifting from 2 to 3
The 96 has a "TPS" Throttle position sensor it is notorious for getting dirty and causing problems. I took mine off and cleaned it real well and it has worked well ever since.
It is located to the right of the oil filler neck and down on the throttle linkage assembly. With this placement, any spillage of oil during refill can add to the contaminants gunking it up.
Also cleaning all the electrical connections can help with this problem. They can also wreak havoc with the signals going to the Transmission. Clean those and put a little dielectric grease on them before reconnecting them.
I hope this helps your problem.

If you are having a problem with just the 2-3 shift, shifting high, and downshifting to soon, the problem would lie in a bad seal in the front clutch piston. This is very common.Sorry but it's time to O/H. TGCTD
