89 CTD won't start
89 CTD won't start
My '89 ctd with 200k+ was running great, no smoke, good power. It always started on first turn of crank. I shut it off for 3-4 minutes at store, then it wouldn't restart. I have replaced lift pump, fuel filter, bled out the air, took fuel cutoff solenoid off of injector pump and bench checked it with 12 Volts, it pulled plunger in with no sticking. I losened a couple of injector coupling nuts and fuel comes out when I <br>crank it. I jumped 12 volts to the cutoff solenoid. Nothing helps. Starter spins engine but no sign of firing. I don't know what else to do. Suggestions please.

My first question would be....when cranking over are you gettin any kind of smoke from the tail pipe
After thought:: sounds like your sucking air if your not gettin smoke then your not puttin fuel in or enuff fuel in....try cranking and bleeding all the injectors

Re:89 CTD won't start
There is no visible smoke when cranking. I bled the injectors by losening the connector nuts and cranking, and fuel ran out. Does this eliminate everything but the injection pump? Can I take the pump apart without removing it from the engine?
Re:89 CTD won't start
It still sounds to me like a fuel shutoff problem. Are you sure you didnt take the KSB solenoid on the side of the pump off thinking that was the fuel solenoid? Not saying you did, but it could happen.
Re:89 CTD won't start
Nope, I'm don't know what the KSB does, but it is not getting voltage when the engine is cold just like the manual says. The fuel shutoff is getting 12 volts when the ignition is on, I jumped it to be sure the voltage drop when the starter was cranking was not letting it deenergize. Still nothing. I remember from my old Holly carburetor days where you could stop it from flooding by rapping it with a hammer. You don't suppose a good rap would help that injection pump?

If you are getting fuel to the injectors, then the pump is doing its job. Disconnect the grid heaters on the intake manifold and spray a little bit of ether or WD40 in the intake and try starting it.
