4 low pulsates oddly

i was in a parking lot today just just going through the 4 by 4 gears with the shifter because i lubed up the linkage underneath...i never use 4 low so i thought im gonna just op it into 4 low and drive slow for a few meters to see if 4 low is still alive ya know?...so i put it into 4 low while in neutral and put her in drive and idle away....it pulls quite a bit just idling which im sure is normal...BUT it was pulling me forward in PULSES...it wasnt a steady drive...it was rythmiccally pulling me and not pulling pullin and not pullin....in 4 high it behaves perfectly normally

just wondering what i should check or what i should be looking for as normal driving behaviour in a straight line with the 4 low....it almost felt like it wasnt fully engaged or something but there was no grinding or anything and no vibration either

did you try giving it a little throtle to see what would happen, i think it would smooth rite out if given some steady pedal pressure....

With the steeper 4lo gearing, the inherent lash in the drivetrain will be more noticible...my guess is you're feeling the sum of the differential lash, driveshaft ujoint lash, driveshaft slip yolk lash, transfer case lash...the list goes on---kinda like pedaling a 10 speed bike up a steep hill---in first, you can feel each pump of your legs, but in, say, 6th or 8th gear, if you have the strength, the motion is smooth.

I have noticed similar symptoms in my previous 4x4 vehicles. In my old F150 especially since I had a broken tranny mount.

I tend to get nervous over every little lurch, squeak, rattle and bump (of which my truck has MANY ), but when it comes down to it, these trucks have some pretty serious drivetrain components and, unless it just stops dead with a pool of fluid under the offending part, it's prolly just part of the program that comes with owning a no-nonsense piece of machinery
