2003 engine looping at idle

i have a 2003 dodge ram 3500 with 198,000 miles on it. i have only had it a month now and it is starting to loop at idol. it started to get bad when there was about 1/8 tank of gas left. i changed the fuel filter and filled it up. it ran fine for awhile. tonight it started again this time with 1/2 tank. HAYNES troubleshooting says anything from vacume leaks to injectors to fuel pump. does anyone have any ideas? the truck seams to run ok once you get rolling it just loops at idol, sometimes idols high. any help would be great, i hope i didn't get taken.

A fuel pump gauge would sure help you troubleshoot...

Hey, welcome aboard. These are good trucks, but sometimes they like to mess with you, like loping at idle.

Is it throwing any codes? There's a way to do it by turning your key on and off a couple of times while pressing the tripmeter **** or something like that - check your owners manual on how to do it (I haven't done it in a long time). If there are any codes, they will be displayed in the odometer.

Could be something as simple as lousy fuel (not gas...) too. Any idea of who the previous owner was, did they run any diesel fuel additives (DFA) in it? Are you? With 198k on it, there's been some fuel flowing through it. I wonder if its worth checking/changing that new fuel filter; maybe there is a lot of gunk in the fuel/fuel system - its been known to happen.

Hang in there, like I said, these are good trucks.

Go check for codes - its easy and free while sitting in the driveway.

the only code it has shown was a p0341 camshaft potsion (cmp) sensor signal that came on when my wife almost stalled it and when i first changed the FUEL filter

With the DRB I would monitor fuel rail setpoint and actual psi. There is also a test for the fuel contol solenoid which I would check as that is most likely the cause.
