help!-i have a 2001 3/4 4x4 (auto)cummins that has a remote start and when you try to start it it fires and runs for 3-4 seconds then dies this process repetes 4-5 times before it stays running if it starts at all -if you use the key it starts instantly-do they have a heater timer on the remote?-or am i going the wrong direction-any ideas out there would be greatly appreciated

 

I have remote start on my truck and it is hooked up to the wait to start light. I have never had a problem with it not starting or shuting off.

 

I HAD THE SAME PROBLEM ON MY 2001 DAKOTA .there is a saftey switch that wont let the truck run if the hood is open, mine was cracked(cheap platic), so it was half engaged.once i disconnected it, i had no more problems.you can by a new switch at any auto parts store.

Is it an aftermarket remote start? On my 1993 Dodge, I installed a remote start that had a setting for a delay of about 15 seconds. It engages the ignition circut, waits for 15 seconds, (which is about enough time for the "wait to start" light to go out. It then starts. My problem was that it needed a tach signal to keep running. I had to find the tach pin in the computer harness to attach the tach wire from the remote start module. Without the tach signal, it would attempt to start 3-4 times and then lockout.
(Don't know if thats your problem but symptoms sound familar)

 

I don't have one but Ive heard some sense the oil pressure to let it keep running. could be that it isn't getting the right signal soon enough and shuts down. my truck has a small delay after starting bfore oil gauge registers much presure. just an idea. a friends car did this last winter.
