I thought the lift pumps mounted on the fuel filter housing only developed 4-5 psi... ?

My boss has a 2001. Put in tank pump in. Now he thinks the ip is going. Missing and white smoke. Time to talk him into a gauge.

It don't, but a failing vp44 does

the stock lift pump by the fuel filter will put out 15 psi (when new), the in-tank pump is the low pressure pump, around 8 psi at idle

OK - so why does a failing VP44 cause white smoke...

the stock lift pump by the fuel filter will put out 15 psi (when new), the in-tank pump is the low pressure pump, around 8 psi at idle
Huh - my buddy has an '04, he's got lower fuel pressure than my in-tank pump; his pressure hasn't really changed from new, from what I hear.
He's approaching 50K miles.

intermitten white smoke is just one sign of a dieing vp44, I would say that it's low pressure on the HIGH side; Your buddy has a common rail, toldly diffarent fuel system, I thought we were talking 2nd gens here.

Sure - low HIGH pressure from a CP3 also makes white smoke... I know it's a fundamental question (dad - WHY does 2+2=4?), I was just curious why the smoke is white just because the engine is running (I imagine) way lean?

I'm used to:

black smoke - extra fuel
blue smoke - too much oil
white smoke - too much antifreeze or water
WOT haze - well-tuned diesel
green smoke - too much chili

He said he paid around $500 for his. He couldn't rember the name of it. Does that sound like the normal in tank pump?
