1st gen timing index pin
1st gen timing index pin
This evening after having changed out my lift pump, I was going to mark #1 TDC by using the timing index pin. When I puled the plunger out, I had a round snap ring pop out. I assume this hold the entire assembly in place in the housing.

Having never seen one of these index pin assemblies, I assume that the assy. cannot go into the timing housing. Do I have to worry about the entire plunger assy. coming out?

Has anyone ever had this hapen before (I'm sure I am not the first)? How did you fix it? Should I be concerned? Do I need to take it in and have it repaired imediately?

I did try pushing it back in using a socket but I just could not get enough leverage with my big hands in the tight space available. I can just barely reach the index plunger as it is.

HELP!!
Carl
Re:1st gen timing index pin
Yes, I had mine pop out when pulling too hard. I used a socket to push mine in but perhaps you may have chosen a socket too big? Anway, try a short extension as well and make sure you pull it back enough afterwards such that pin does not rub back of cam gear. The pin is not that useful anyway since it is not accurate enough for proper timing and itr is very awkward. I only put it back to keep dirt out.
Re:1st gen timing index pin
Carl,
I was locating TDC last night and I also pulled the pin out and there was no retaining ring. With the O ring on the pin the pin is held firmly in place - I don't think that it will move out.
--
Al
