1996 Fuel Tank assembly problem!

Hello:

Need Immediate help.

Have 1996 dodge ram diesel. The fuel is slowly leaking from the top of the fuel tank assembly. It is the 1 1/2" dia steel plug with the 3/8" and 1/4" steel fuel lines coming out of it.

Carter (mfr) and dodge have a scam going. You have to buy the whole assembly, best price $231.50, when the steel plug is about $10. But you can't buy just it! Here comes the scam. If you buy the replacement assembly, you have to take the vent plug out of your old one and put it in your new one! You can also buy the vent plug in unit seperately. But not the only part on top of this unit that rusts and is not plastic!

Does anyone have a work around???????????

John

Re:1996 Fuel Tank assembly problem!

I think I may have it solved.

I cut the lines coming out the top of the plug off at 1/16".

I took a 5/16" and 1/4" steel brake line and cut them each to about 2 1/4" long. Used solder flux on one end of each and tapped them into the top plug holes. Soldered them. Then wrapped 1 1/2" wide masking tape around the plug so about 3/8" stuck up around the top. Filled it with JB weld expoxy.

Seems to be working fine so far and no leaks.

John
