1990 Dodge Cummins dies on road, electrical problem

My 90 Dodge died on the road while driving to work. I had driven about 3 miles when suddenly it died going about 65. So I looked around under the hood near the main wiring harness and found a wire that had shorted out.
I reconnected the wire, shut the hood and everything worked fine for about 4 seconds, then I noticed the voltage meter drop to about 9 volts or so followed shortly thereafter with small clouds of black smoke from the same wire I had patched together, I took this as my cue to shut her down and towed it home where I would like to try to get it fixed without taking it to the shop.

BTW,the headlights , power windows and mirrors, fan, still work with the bad wire now disconnected. Starter, radio and voltage meter don't work.

It would be nice to know where the wire went to without having to tear it out of the harness so if anyone has a better clue than me what it is please give a holler. Thanks

WAs the wire you repaired a fuseable link? There are about 6 or so fuseable links on the drivers fender near the firewall coming out of a main lead from the battery. Something has rubbed through feeding that wire obviously, but without a little more info, I guess we are sorta stuck.

I would guess that maybe the lead to the alternator has a rub on it?
