Question Would this fit in a Ram?

We have a 125 kW backup genset at work. I got to take a peek at it and turns out the engine unit is a Cummins 6CT (it is a 12 valve). The 8.3L. Then I got to thinking, how awesome would it be to have a monster like that in a Ram. So do you guys think it would fit under our hoods?

There was a guy who squeezed a C8.3 into a Ford 350. It was in the conversion forum on the TDR website.

You can find them in motorhomes as well.

I know a guy that tinkered with it - after a lot of time and EXPENSE, he determined that it was just too heavy. I believe they are like 600 puonds more than the 5.9

Would be awesome if ya could make it work thou

Sounds like you need a 3500 frame to hold that beast. Also some serious spring and frame reworking....

If done right it would most likely twist itself in half if you ever put the throttle down to the floor!

The guy who put the 8.3 in a Ford had to build a doghouse/custom dash to make it fit. Like the Dr. said, it's just too big and heavy for a pickup.

Hey, if you're going to try to cram something impractical into a pickup, why mess with a puny little ISC? Put an ISX in the bed with a V-drive. Keep the 5.9 under the hood to run the A/C and act as ballast.

Does this mean that I'm finally a legend??? [tear]

I did see the F-350 with one in it on eBay. It was mean looking.

The stock power levels on the older 8.3's are actually lower than the new 5.9's, right? I'm sure the potential's about 30% higher, but you'd probably be pressed to find as many after market items. You'd need custom made EDM's, some BIG turbo's, Dual custom intakes, etc..

Ahh, wouldn't be that bad. If you do it, take a doner Dodge frame and piggy-back it to the one in your actual truck. Weld it together, and you should even have enough clearence. Put some leaf's from T-Rex or somebody up front, and you'd have it made. Oh yes...

Some are P-pumped engines, same as the '94-'98.4 Rams. TST has plates for them also.

Bullydog has bigger injectors.

Holset makes turbos that are more than big enough for the 8.3.

Stock intake is fine. The air filters are bigger than the BHAF that some Ram owners use. Me included.

It was just a hair brained idea I had after seein that genset at work. Guess I shouldn't let my mine wander so much. That would be pretty cool though. A fellow diesel head that runs a big rig shop and happens to be a friend of mine , HE even suggested that I look at the Cummins ISL. He said that the ISL and the ISC are pretty close in size and dimensions.

If I really wanted to swap in a larger engine, I would do my best to try to stuff a N14 in my truck. It would be a lot of work though.

Yeah, I think the ISL is 8.9L, not 8.3L. Ratings to like 330 (for AG purposes, like me ) Pretty tough engine so far.

signature 600, I meant physical size, not displacement. I am going to guess that you have a ISL in a tractor or something, are you a farmer?

Nope, sell farm machinery. We use the QSC in combines, which is the older ISC, and Massey Ferguson uses the ISL in some of their combines. I think it's the same block, just stroked probably.

We also use the old 6CTA8.3 in our 160-225 hp tractors, that will be fun when the warranty runs out. "Hello, TST, I need som cam plates for 8.3L Cummins'"
