I don't think theKamaz sounds as cool as the 8x8 Tatra while going offroad. That's the lost souls of diesels in purgatory sound ;D And it's not too loud....for an artillery mover .

Another cool sounding engine is the old 600hp Mercedes V8 truck diesel, especially when the mufflers had burned through.

AlpineRAM

Re:The worst sounding diesel EVER!!!

I've raced a dualed straight piped 6.0 before and I thought it was one of the best sounding diesels ever (second to the Cummins )

Re:The worst sounding diesel EVER!!!

Any of you guys ever been to a Big Rig pull? I went to one a couple of years ago that the ATPA put on. Almost every one of them had Detroit V12's in them. The announcer said most of the Rigs were turning over 2000 hp. I didn't get to talk to any of the drivers to ask why they used the V12's. Could it be the cubic inches?

Re:The worst sounding diesel EVER!!!

The V12-71 was actually two 238 cube engines on the same crank. They used the same heads. If I remember right the highest factory rating for a 238 (6-71T) was 268 hp. There is also a 12V-92 with factory rating well over 600 hp. That engine is two 6V92TTA engines bolted front to front and a crank that bolts together. I have seen a few in trucks. There were three or four leased to Eagle Motor Lines and all owned by the same person. The old Detroits were very easy to install higher port liners (export), larger injectors (I ran 120mm in a 92 series) and timing increases. Hard to keep them together and mileage was not real good, but they could be set up to go like *ell. For expample a 6V-92 with 325 HP could easily get 400 HP. Best mileage was 5 to 5 1/2 hotted up.
2 stroke diesels can make more power per cubic inch than 4 stroke diesels, the pullers are probably limited by a displacement rule so they run 2 strokes to get the most power possible. They could care less about economy or reliability. I've seen on ESPN one puller whose truck frame twists so much while pulling that the left front tire is about a foot higher in the air than the right front. Now THAT's torque! He's got so much fuel going through the motor that there's fire at the base of the huge jets of smoke coming out the stacks. BTW, even on tv it sounds awesome. I just wish the announcer would shut up while they're pullin'. :

Re:The worst sounding diesel EVER!!!

wannadiesel what I meant by that was that the v12-71 was two six cylinder banks using most of the same parts of the 6-71 in opposition to the 12v-92 which used two v6-92 engines literally bolted together. Same for the 16v-92 which was literlally two 8v-92 engines bolted together. The cranks actually bolt together in the middle. In the early 70's before too much epa restrictions the 12v-71 could be ordered with larger injectors making it 535 hp. These are the units that we ran, might have been ordered as off road construction equipment as they weighed almost 60,000 empty in the Brockway with the trailer on it. The trailers were Fontain chassie with Summit body's and three axles.

Re:The worst sounding diesel EVER!!!

The last one of those old Brockway trucks that I saw had a 18 yard dump on and a 8’ double wing plow on the front. Tough old trucks
