Why no access panels to the fuel tank top?

Just curious if anyone knows why manufacturers don't put access panels to the fuel tank top. What's the engineering reason for this? Had to drop the tank on my wife's old Caravan to replace the fuel pump, once. An access panel in the floor would have made the whole job much easier. To get to the tank top on these trucks, the tank either has to be dropped or the bed raised. Seems like there ought to be a better solution.

Because that makes too much sense. I've helped a friend change the intank pump in his 4Runner and sure enough... there is an access panel that can be removed for access so you don't have to drop the tank.

The truck was designed by an engineer , not a mechanic

Trust me, the engineer thought of this, but was overruled by a bean counter. The same goes for drain plugs in the torque converter, transmission pan and differential housing(s).

I would like to back up this statement with the 6.0 powerstroke. Just raise the hood, you'll understand.

The Audi I had had an access hole.

What I needed was a heated garage.

I might venture into doing this on the next truck.

Sounds like a great idea...no wonder it was not implemented.
