Hey now, this is not exactly what I'd call commuting........................

My truck has only towed one time, hauling a small U-haul open deck trailer with a lawn mower. So I definately fall in the drive it for fun category. The reason I bought a diesel:

1) Economy, this alone may pay the difference in cost over it's lifetime. (Or ate least that was thinking back when diesel was cheaper). Resale value will also help recoup the diesel price premium.
2) Longevity, I plan to keep this thing a good while, durability is a big plus.
3) Capacity, I'd rather have the ability to tow / haul something that I never use than vice versa. I wouldn't want to own a truck I was afraid to load a pallet of stones on. I've had over ton in bed of this truck and I wouldn't want to do that to a 1/2 ton.
4) Bombability - Easy and cheap HP/TQ upgrades if desired.

I only have 65,000 miles on her so far but I dont see much difference in maintenance cost. Sure it takes more oil at oil change, no big deal.

shame... every time I see a new Z06 it's being driven at the speed limit by some gray haired dude suffering from a mid-life crisis and not being thrown around a road course with abandon

I got my truck because I need a truck and if I'm going to have a truck, I want one that makes awesome power and gets good mileage... only one that fits the bill is a Cummins

I drive mine for fun, and haven't had as much fun since I quit driving motorcycles a number of years ago. I have a diesel pickup as it made sense;

1. Wanted a larger vehicle as were driving two cars places,

2. If I got a larger vehicle it had to be a diesel,

3. If I got a diesel I wanted a Cummins,

4. Wanted a 4 door vehicle, at least,

5. And that narrows it down pretty quickly.

I now have a vehicle that costs less than what a lot of people pay for fancy 1/2 ton pickups or minivans, I get as good of mileage in town as people with a Honda minivan or a BMW sedan or an Audi sedan, etc,. it's certainly more versatile than other offerings, and it'll last at least twice as long as other offerings. Don't tow anything and don't plan to, but the logic of 'need to tow to own a diesel' doesn't make sense to me anyway;

1. If you don't drive 100 mph everywhere don't own any vehicle capable of doing so ?

2. If you don't always have 5 people in your sedan get a two seater ?

3. If you don't drive offroad everywhere don't get a SUV/4x4 ?

???? Vehicles can have many uses, don't let dumb logic limit your choices.

From: Well I thought I lived in America, but its looking more like france every day.
I bought mine when the weight i was pulling was way to much for my half ton ferd. I have a 5er that the half ton did pretty well with. but then i bought a boat and wanted to pull doubles. I then started reseaching and found that Dodge/Cummins was the meanest, toughest, pulling son of a gun built so I was hooked and WOW I will never go back to spark plugs. These trucks were built to tow heavy loads. my trailer and boat weigh about 12500 lbs with it loaded and this is no problem for my truck. I also pull a good utility trailer behind the 5er with 2-3 quads on the back with no problems.

I bought my truck to haul a slide in camper a few times a year, and a couple times a year, the slide in with a car hauler behind it. It rarely gets driven, mostly in the winter months because its 4x4 and my commuter vehicle is not. I usually only drive the dodge on weekends in the summer. 2.5 years of owning it, and its only got 32,000 miles on it.

Farming....need I say more. I regularly haul 14k worth of cattle, and hay, and tobacco, and equipment from one farm to the next (and to Deere to get workd on ) and hauling feed, and fertilize and seed, and......oh yeah the wife too (no, I ain't sayin I need a one ton to haul my wife around in) So I guess I fall into the I need it to live, ( though I would be just as well off with a Chevy or Ford, far superior truck but no as comfortable with the powertrains)

My regular morning crew and I talked with the Dodge area rep the other day. He said most Durango owners don't service their 4wd!

I'd sure have trouble hauling cattle with a Toyota! My truck is definately a NEED and not a WANT. This truck does as much or more work than my tractor. It would be real hard to get a gooseneck hitch mounted on the truck lid of my wife's Saturn!

I'm really surprised to see the poll. I was expecting to see like 60 or 70% in the NEED column. I guess that runs along side the average age of users on here. Most are young and still have time and money to play. I want to be one of those again!

I do use my truck for work on our ranch but we have other trucks and I could definately get by without using my own, so in that sense I don't need my truck but it's what I prefer to drive anyways. I don't think too many people in this country choose their vehicle based soley on what they need, otherwise we wouldnt have things like heated seats, leather, nav systems etc. as factory options or for example power ajustable foot pettles that many of these trucks have. I do use my truck as my daily driver also.

On my second Cummins. Had a 93 before this. I just like the diesel, and the heavier parts that come with the package.

I love it, but I can't justify the cost of the new trucks anymore. Will more than likely pick up a gas truck in a couple of years.
