Are you looking for something with "wheels and handles" type of portability something like this?http://cgi.ebay.com/7500W-Electric-S...QQcmdZViewItem
or something a little heavier that can be "dragged or lifted into position" portable?(like this)http://cgi.ebay.com/Northern-Lights-...QQcmdZViewItem
I had always thought that if I ever lived up where ice storms were a way of life, I'd get something like the following. This is a Kubota powered Onan marine genset w/o radiator. I've always thought this would be ideal for plumbing into a home's hot water heating system.

I'm rather partial to the little Kubota engines as they are pretty bulletproof and ULTRA-reliable. They have a very wide distributorship for parts and svc.
I have a 6Kw kubota powered genset/light tower with a 30+ gal internal tank. On one tankful It'll run for 60+ hrs at rated load.
1800rpm = last forever

What STrattler said. Also you can buy some real inexpensive Chinese portable diesel gensets. I have one (6500w) I paid less than $800.00 new for. It only has a couple hundred hrs. on it but so far so good.

I got some of the chinese [ junk ] would not do again , unless it was an emergency and I could not aford at the time , witch is why I bought the last one .
Every time I used it something went wrong or broke , I like to shut off petcocks when I shut down , this one broke off 3 times , threads are different than any replacments avalable , no screen in the petcock tank end , so the fuel leaked out when I drove with it in the be of the truck on an on an on an on it went .
The next time I will get a Miller welder genset , [ comes in diesel { for twice the price }] now besides power it can work also , 2 cylinder , it will put out 10k while welding .

(unbelievably
)Our plant recently wound up with 3 of those little Miller diesel welders in addition to the bigger stuff.. VERY NICE UNITS! They have tiny wheels, but are not roadworthy. Only for dragging around the plant very slowly. The Miller's we've got have small Kubota's in them, and they run @3600RPM.
A nice feature is to be able to get 120/240vac 10kw 60hz power, and when unloaded the engine will throttle back to idle, just like when welding(quiet too!).
