Question Where To Buy a ISL 425 or ISM 500?? And Will It Work???

Hey guys,

Anyone know where a good place to buy a Cummins ISL 450 engine? I am thining about doing that engine in an F-650. 8.9L, 425HP and 1250 ft./lbs of beauty!!! That, and there is already a 60HP/140ft.lbs chip out for it so 485HP and 1390TQ are the actual numbers I would be pushin! Talk abouta monster, and at 9.3L, it would be sweet!

Even better, would be the ISM 500 at 10.8L!

First, anyone know the best place to buy one of these bad boys?

And Second, I assume that the 8.9L will fit the F-650 just fine, but will the 10.8L fit under the hood???

Lastly, Does anyone know if (and where) one can buy an F-650 or F-750 without an engine?

Thanks guys!

D, I think you'd be better served by an ISX if you can slam one in there. They can make 600hp all day reliably, but I suspect that you've already considered that and an 18L engine just won't fit into an F-650 or F-750.

I've seen quite a few ISLs and ISMs available on Ebay such. It's probably better to just ring the local Cummins distributor and see what they can get for you on a skid.

I drove an ISL at 375hp and it had no problem yanking around 40K of low boy and 3-ton dump truck, and would hold 45mph on the Monument hill on CO's front range (I-25).

Sweet! Yes, I figured that the 14L ISX600 would probably be a bit of an "odd" fit to say the least ! LOL! I am hoping that the ISM would fit or at the least get the ISL 425 in there. I know that the ISL uses the same 3200 tranny that you can get normally in the F-650 so I am hoping that will work.

Any guesses on how big of an engine you could get into an F-650/750?

I would love to get something rediculously large in there! Even if the ISX is too big, the ISM only weighs 800lbs. more than the standard engine and the F-750 comes with axle ratings that would easily handle the extra weight.

If you are planning on working this truck hard you also have to consider the radiator and intercooler needed, the one from the ISB or C7 is not gonna cut it if the truck is working hard. That's going to cut into the space for the engine. You also need to consider the rear axle.

For a play toy these are non-issues.

I will be towing a max of 16,000lbs. and plan on using it for a little off-roading.

Axle will be fine with that load.

I'd want a radiator and intercooler to match the engine, with the radiator being most important if space is an issue.

The off-roading isn't problem, you really won't be working the engine hard doing that.

You could mount the radiator in the bed or below the bed (ala sledpuller 2 or whatever that truck is called now) to save room for the engine.

Sounds like a fun project

Also, TS performance offers chips for the newer 8.3s, and I beleve TST offers fueling improvements for the older mechanical ones. I don't know how much power can be had with either of these, but they'd be a much easier fit.

Any idea who does these sorts of prejects a sI don't have the faintest clue where to begin buying all of the necessary parts etc etc. if I decide to do this.

Lastly, does anyone know if F-650/750s can be ordered without an engine? I don't want to waste money on a new 6.7 Cummins if I don't have to.

I've read a lot about the ISLs on Escapees but I didn't know they were up to 425 now. They say the 400 is rated 1300 tq. with the right Allison but is derated to 1200 with the lighter trans. My neighbor just got back from the north with his 40' MH ISL 400/1200 pulling an inclosed trailer with his toys. He grossed 37K and he averaged 9.7 for the summer - wow! The Ms are popular cuz they have a high power/weight ratio but they are a sob to work on. I'd love to have a 485hp ISL in a 6 or 7 rv hauler! Craig

I hear ya on the working on them but I would HOPE (hope being the key word) that with an ISM pulling such an insanely light load as compared to the RVs they are put in; it would never really need "worked on"!

You can get an ISM to run very reliable at 500 hp. But at that horse power the back end might get a little spin happy. You can fit an ISC or ISL into one of those trucks. You just have to get the cooling package to work out as someone here already said.

Will the ISM fit with proper cooling? It won't spin cause it's 4x4!

Theres a guy in Blairsville Pa who's into these projects.......he builds a few trucks a year. I dont know how booked up he is, but pm me if you want his number.
