When did Cats come about?

When were catalytic converts first installed on Cummins diesels? My 3500 has a build date of 10/23/03 and there is something upstream of the muffler. I don't think it should be a "cat". Is it a resonator or expansion chamber??

That would have to be a cat. Check your HP figure on your engine... Is it 235? Then you have a CA emissions model. I believe they were the first to get the cat. Your 3500, FWIW, has a build date within a couple of days of my 3500. I have a cat...

I was thinking 04.5 was the first , but maybe in places like California they were introduced earlier .

It's the resonator.

Took the place of the Cat when they did away with them when the 24 valve engines came about.

They tried just replacing the Cat with a straight pipe,
ut the exhaust resonated so bad they had to put something back in there that was Cat like.

The EPA got their fingers in the pie once again, and the Cat came back in mid '04.
