What is a lot of hours on a cummins?

In a first gen 5.9 liter. What are the service hours? Or useful life hours how ever it's best to put it?

6000 hours is what Cummins rates for rebuild but some go 10,000 without problems.
After 10k you can pretty much plan on a rebuild.

whats 10K hours equate to in miles?? i know there are a ton of variables and really no way to tell but think about the 4-500k mile trucks driving around and think about how many hours are on that truck

6000K hours @ 60 miles per hour would only be 360k i thought they were people getting alot more than that out of one

3 postes up Infidel said some get 10,000 hours thats 10,000hrs x 60mph = 600,000miles. Results will vary because of actual speed traveled, idle time ect.

I think you would have to travel much faster than you expect to put miles on like that. Any idling and street drving is included in those hours.. The # I have seen for miles relating to an hour meter is 40. I can't you tell where I saw that and it was quite some time ago. It's only an average anyway.

I know on the common rail cummins says the service life is 350K. before rebuild. But its like anything if you take care of it it will last longer. Look at the gassers that have a service life of 150k but have 250k on them with no issues. I have a lady at my church that traded a honda accord in last year with over 350k and still running strong.

60 mph is not a very good figure to establish an AVERAGE figure. Like stated above 40 mph is MUCH closer and it would be closer to 30 mph if the rig sees at least half of it's duty on the city streets.

No matter what you figure for the miles per hour it all balances out.
Think we can all agree that up and down city rpms are harder on an engine than steady rpm highway driving.

all I know is, 423,500 miles on mine at 40 mph would be over 10,000 hours .. . . ( i think 55 would be a better average for mine) . . that would still be 7700 hours . . . . these engines do last longer than the 6000 hour rating.

I wrote cummins on this and they answered my email this morning!

Hey Joe, we are glad you like the 07 ISB engine, we like it too! As far as
overhaul intervals we don't have a specific overhaul timeframe published. This
is because there are many factors that go into the life of an engine. These
things include everything from a dusty enviornment to a very hot or very cold
enviornment. What we have published is an oil consumption minimum. When an engine hits these marks it is probably time for a rebuild. These intervals are
as follows:

If an engine uses 1 quart of oil per 10 hours, 400 miles, or 675 kilometers then it is time for a rebuild.

This information comes from Warranty Alert--A0632. The reason we pick this type of guideline is because we have some engines out there with 500,000 miles on them that are still very strong engines.

We hope this information is helpful for you and if you have any questions feel
free to ask. If your project is a repower we will have to turn you towards you
local Cummins dealer/distributor for information. Here at the factory we don't
have any information about repowers. There also may be information about shops specializing in repowers online.

Let us know how the project turns out!

We thank you for your interest in Cummins products. We occasionally
misunderstand a question. If our answer to your communication looks like we
have misunderstood your e-mail please reply with further inquiry.

Seems like they average it at 40mph. And they base it off oil consumption. That would be like putting a quart in a week for me.

Joe,

That is some excellent information. 1 quart oil to 400 miles seems like a lot to me. A gallon in 1,600 miles. I think I would do something before mine used that much. In the 70's when Ford had all those crummy 360's that sucked oil they said 300 miles per quart was acceptable. I know several guys not very happy with that and at least one had his rebuilt at Ford's expense.

The Honda S2000 can burn 1qt per 1k off the showroom floor and it's considered within Factory specs.

I know, different animal altogether but thought that was interesting.

The cummins marine powered generator set running at 1800 rpm's is rated for 13,500 hours before any thing needs to be done other than routine maintenance. Some have gone 20,000 hrs.
