We just found out that the engine is blown in my neighbors '96 F350. 90K on it. SRW, ext cab, black paint, nice shape. EO40 transmission. (Auto).

It needs a shortblock. A rebuilt shortblock will be about $4K + core charge. Used engines seem to be $3K or more.

What would you do with this truck. I can't imagine the truck in running order would be worth more than $10K. Seems a shame to spend $5K on it, yet what else ?

His wife passed away from cancer in March and I think his car just blew a head gasket.

Sounds like a great candidate for a Cummins repower.

I'm thinking the same thing. A guy down the street repowered his '99 F350. Only thing is that my neighbors truck has a stupid EO40 automatic which I don't think will stand up behind a Cummins. And my neighbor isn't mechanical enough and doesn't have the tools to do the swap himself. And he needs his truck fairly soon to enjoy summer.

But why put another stupid Powerstroke in that truck. He had it turned up the way it was. With a larger turbo and no intercooler or EGT gauges. I think he needs a 12V Cummins with about 600 ftlbs of torque. But what about the transmission ?

This is a pic of my 96 I was very close to putting a Cummins in it for pulling but I sold it. But this pic will give you an idea of what you can do with them.

I'm pretty sure Mad Dog has an EO4D behind his 12v pushing serious power. But his tranny is rebuilt (ATS I'm pretty sure) but they can be amde to last with a Cummins. Probally easier to put a 48RE in tho.

The 7.3 PSD’s are generally very good engines and are known to go 200-300K in heavy service like school buses and tow trucks. Do you know why his failed at only 90K? Unless he is into serious mods & big power, I doubt if it makes sense to swap in a Cummins compared to the price of a good rebuilt PSD. I’d look for a complete long block from a good rebuilder. I’ve heard Jasper is good but never used them personally.

It is a BTS tranny. Those thing will hold anything I had one in my 96 psd.

find SUPERDUTY in the member list & PM him...he knows more than any one person should about this swap...

FWIW, i think he got tired of folks fighting with him & went to another forum, don't see him posting up much any more.

No its not. it's horrible. I got ripped off by them and so have many others. They have a cool domain name so they get referred to a lot but please do not recommend them unless you've delt with them personally.

I hope that last post wasnt rude, but they pretty much stole 500 bucks from me.

Also, although I love my truck with the Cummins (2003 HO), if I had it to do over again I would have put a ford 7.3 in there. The CTD was ALOT more work than I had thought.
