IMO the only thing new dodge has goin for them is the cummins. I hate all the body styles of the new trucks. I cant stand the ferd 6.0 (the 7.3 was by far better) The Duraturd is ok if ya leave it stock but wheres the fun in that. Only if dodge wouldnt have changed the body style and got rights to the allison tranny thatd make for a real truck.

The ideal truck IMO is a Chevy with the cummins in it and the Allison auto behind it.

Prior to my 97 CTD, I owned a 81' Toyota diesel pu and an 83'GMC pu gasser that I put over 400,000miles on it.
Original engine in the GMC, but I couldn't afford to keep it in transmissions! FIrst one,(factory) lasted to 250,000 miles but they kept dying way too frequently after that. But that old GMC just kept going and going and using oil and going and going but it never left me on the side of the road because of the motor!
My CTD is much more comfortable and powerful than that GMC ever was. And the 12valve Cummins promises to surpass that GM motor in longevity (not to mention power). After all, I am almost halfway to my prev record now!
Negligible problems with my Dodge: (plastic door trim, brake shoes, power window switches, pittman arm) I AM looking at balljoints and tierods soon, but hey! at 182k miles it is about due while hauling around that quality Indiana cast iron engine.
When the tranny goes, (they all eventually fail sometime) a bulletproof TC and tranny will go back in and some HP bombing will begin!
The engine is the heart of any vehicle, and if it is reknown for failing, the vehicle doesn't usually have a good trackrecord regardless if the tranny or the balljoints are still functional while it is sitting in the back-40 collecting grass and weeds.
Thank goodness someone chose a dang'ed good "heart" to put in our trucks.. Hey, think about how long we keep these things now! Notice how your Odometer now goes up to a million miles now? I only remember seeing that years ago in SEMI's !!! It isn't until just recent history that cars were equipped with that extra digit.

I inwardly smile each time I hear that engine come to life by merely "bumping" the starter.
The window switches, paint jobs, lift pumps, track bars, balljoints, brake shoes and all the other wearing parts are manageable expecially when you KNOW that engine will get you home when you need it to.
I waited a Long time to get my beloved CTD... I passed up several other chances at other brands but when the right CTD came along, I jumped on it and have never regretted it.

Another vote for having a good engine wrapped up in a so-so truck...BUT it does have the most miles of any vehicle anyone in my family has owned at 275K.

Overall, I'm really surprised with my Dodge. I knew the motor would be awesome going into it, that is the only reason I bought it. The things that I like about it is how high the seats are off the floor of the truck...Dad and brother both have Chevy's (01 and 95, both non power seats, though, makes a big difference) and they both feel like they're on the floor after getting used to my Dodge.

They both drive much better that my Dodge (steering), but again 275K miles vs. 160K on the 01, and 100K on the 95. Mine probably needs a few parts .

The Chevy's ride is about equal, but my truck weighs more than both, and they are Crewcab, Longbed (flatbed) trucks to boot.

My Dodge would pull both of them Backwards, together. 2001 6.0L Gasser, Auto. 1995 7.4L GAS HOG, 5 Speed. Talk about gutless compared to the Cummins.

The 95 Chevy has a lot of squeaks and rattles, but it used to be a contractors truck, so...

The 01 is much better, and I like the layout of the interior about the same as I do my dodge.

Now, my Dodge has a few rattles and squeaks, but I've created most of them from taking stuff apart to add things .

My Ideal truck is either an 01-02 Chevy, or a new 05 ('cause they put the big hood back on) with a Cummins/Eaton 7 speed/Dana 60/80, 19.5 Tires and Wheels/ and one of them BOSE sound systems Comotoze (sp?) designed (they are awesome , but maybe he could come up with something special for me since I'm spending ~$70K on a custom Pickup )

Is this post long, or what?
Chris

Unhappy

chevy ford dodge all have problems that corp. headquarters will not address but i can say this my last ford was just that the last time i buy one the dodge i have i have had since new and to this date 250K+ miles on it ...parts, 7 batteries 3 drag links 2 ujoints 1 fan motor 1 alt 1 starter, bigger radiator (stock was to small) 1 water pump 1 fan belt tensioner, ac expansion valve this has been the most reliable truck i have ever owned the ford before it cost me $200 a month in repairs on average by the time i had 100K on the ford it had 5 yes 5 trannys in it
i also own a 98 chevy 3500 crew cab duelly it has 70K on it and has had minor mechanical .problem but lots of electrical and when it wont start its just a big pain
the co i work for bought 150 new fords this fiscal year all the automatics have had serious problems 27 scattered parts. the sticks seem ok but ford just dont get it ....ford quality is job none ..and look under the hood can you work on it? same with the dmax,i have 3 friends with them all three have sat on the road side with fuel coming out the dip stick 1 of them had to wait 2 months for back ordered injectors before he got his truck back all three have the means to make huge power just hope you dont get a monday or friday truck. but the cummins by far will take the beating

Not! I like Mopars. Always have. They've been good to me since my first '75 B-300 1-ton van with a 360 and 727 auto. Anyone who bought a K-car was looking for cheap transportation and got it. My buddy's '94 Ford diesel F-350 CC dually got a new aftermarket performance transmission at 74k miles. It's second tranny was on it's way out at 244k miles when he sold the truck and bought an '03 Dodge 2500 Hemi powered Ram. He has 59k trouble free miles on it. The Ford had a lot of trouble from day one. Even the simple water pump was a nightmare to change. The Dodge had a gas cap corrode and caused his check engine light to come on. Auto Zone daignosed the code and sold him a gas cap. Problem solved.
When Dodge has the vibration problem solved with the Ram/Cummins combo, I'll probably be back in a Cummins powered Ram. But for now, the Hemi powered Ram is doing great. No problems and no common issues to wonder about. And it has more than plenty of power for towing our 5th wheel.

A guy I work with traded a 2002 model 3500 cheby gas burner in for a 2005 cheby 2500 gasser early this week. At 26 miles the tranny went out. They towed it in and rebuilt it. He started to work Friday, pulled up to a stop sign, tranny went again with 62 miles on od. When he DID get to work he called dealer and told them he wanted his duelly back! Don't know how he came out yet. nuff said.

Sounds like when I bought my '03. Found it on the net at a dealership in another town. Bought it and they had their goon go get it. When it arrived after dark and I thought I was going to drive it home, they dropped the bomb on me. It went from the lot straight back to the shop. Tranny overheated and the PCM crapped out from moisture in the plug. I finally picked the truck up nine days after I bought it. While I was waiting, a lady called to ask how I like my new truck and how the sales transaction was. When I told her I didn't know if I liked it or not as it's been in the shop since I signed the papers, she had no more questions. My stomach was in knots telling me to cancel the deal and hang on to my flawless '01.5 CTD. So I ignored my gut feeling and battled the dreaded driveline vibration for almost two years and 44k miles. My first three CTD Rams were great! I'll likely own another but it won't be until the vibration and lift pump issues are history. There shouldn't be any "common issues" with a near $40k pickup truck.
Ok, I'm done beachin' about my '03.
