Turn up fuel CAT 3306
How do you turn up the fuel on CAT 3306?
Its in a 1994 D350D articulated dump truck
is there anything else i can do to add some more power?
Can theyr timing be advanced? would it help? we are at 5000 feet elevation.
The ones in the middle (84) smoke a whole lot more, and have more power, then the
one on the left (94)
thanks!

when i was in diesel school, the one teach there did lots of work on cat engines with the inline pumps... when they got worn out, the pumps would actually put out more fuel under load than a fresh pump would.. there was always complaints about low power when they installed rebuilt pumps..

I built a couple of them pumps while at CAT, but am by NO MEANS an expert. I am thinking that maybe you have to do something to the governor or rack adjustment? Like I said, not really to sure but those things ring to mind and not something I would suggest doing by yourself. May end up with a boat anchor instead of an articulating truck. Our fuel pump guy was a wizz at it and could work magic with a fuel system, but he had been doing it for like 15-20 years. I'd find a mechanic who is looking for a little side money and REALLY knows what he is doing.

As far as I remember the gear train on the front has letters or these < and that is how you set the gears up. Pin the flywheel and pin the pump to get it timed right for #1 cylinder. I don't think you could actually go in and offset the teeth and if you did you would have to know for sure how many teeth you have offset it. I can't remember exactly, but it was a couple degrees per tooth. You'd be better off letting someone mess with the rack adjustment, maybe can get it to open the plungers up sooner? I also thought there was an air/fuel ratio, or something like that.
I'll have to see if I can find my 3306 book in the shop. It has stuff in there about the pump, adjustments and maybe I can be a bit more clear.

I thought it was bad to advance the timing on the big diesels...

advancing the timing is easy i did it on our steiger tractor that has a 3306 just pin your pump make sure the gear is loose on the pump shaft and then check your pin holes in the flywheel and rather than lining them up just turn the engine forward so the flywheel hole goes over top the bellhousing hole just about half a hole to be safe then just torque down the gear to the pump shaft and the fueling on ours was done by turning the 2 alen head screws out 1/4 of a turn each but i forget which cover has to come off

Here's a good website that tells you how to turn the fuel up on just about any diesel. Not many pics tho.
Im assuming your 3306 is a newer model and not a late model. Im familiar with the 3406 B and C models, but not a 3306. Good luck!
