thinking about it?
hey guys i just saw this truck for sale http://www.canadatrader.com/result/d...2&pgno=1&srt=1 , it has 272,000 kms on it and this is what it has done too it:fresh safety, custom tranny, all new brakes, 4'' magnaflow, BHAF, CD/MP3/XM, nerf steps, vent visors, bug deflector, chrome mud flaps, custom fifth wheel tailgate, floor mats, winter front insert, studded winter tires.I know this truck is a 12 valve, but i don't know if it is a manual or an auto, it would be nice if it was manual, but i have heard many horror stories of the 5th gear nut coming off and causing all kinds of damage to the tranny. I also know that these trucks have KDP problem and if i don't address this problem it will cost me alot of money. Is it hard to fix the KDP problem or is it easy too do? I would sure like your opions or thoughts on the matter guys!
the kdp is no big deal to fix. there is a jig and everything out there for this job. should take a day or so. the fifth gear thing is common in the early tranny. it can be fixed with a kit from dodge. generally the nut backs off and the fifth gear backs off of the shaft if i remember right.
Personal note, it's often the case that trucks advertised without a note of the transmission listed are the ones with the less favorable unit - in this case the automatic. Especially when so much else is listed as is the case with this truck.
Thet being said there are plenty of good automatic rigs out there - and when it works, it's a nice driving unit. They need to be modified some to make them more durable - if you buy one, plan ahead for replacement with a built unit and you'll be $$$ ahead when it goes out.
As for the rest of the truck, I tend to prefer simpler, less modified rigs overall, and then do work to them myself when time and $$$ allows. It's not nesscisarly a bad thing - perhaps the PO took lots of pride in their truck. good luck with your decision, and welcome to DTR!

thanks for replying 96_12V , i think your right this truck might be an automatic, but in the ad it says this truck has a custom tranny. I guess that's good because the automatics in the early dodge diesels were pretty weak. It is hard to find a truck with a NV4500 5spd that has low mileage, most of the ones i have seen have well over 200,000kms some even have close to 400,000 kms!
