Unhappy Stolen 2003 CTD!

Have a friend with (more like without) an '03 Black Quad-Cab, 2500, SLT, 4x4 CTD. He lives just south of Denver, CO. He recently moved from Texas so his truck still has texas plates on it. License Plate No. 8CL-Y78.

Pretty much stock truck except for the grille, I think it looks like the current Laramie Package grille.

It was idling in the driveway in the morning and left unattended for a short period of time, came out to go to work and it was gone. Happened last Tuesday (12-6-2005).

Any info on where your "stolen and recovered" truck has ended up would be very helpful. Any ideas on what else to do other than report it to insurance company would be great. If anyone happens to catch a visual of the truck please call me at 303-898-2227 (Cell Phone, my name is Eric).

Anyone else have a similar experience and what was the overall result?

Thanks in advance.

That sucks anytime, but especially at Xmas time. Hope he gets it back soon and with no damage.

First - sorry for your loss! It's a miserable feeling I'm sure, even when it's covered by insurance (etc)..

Second - leaving idling vehicles has become such a problem that they just passed a law in Oregon (I think - heard it on the news this week) making it a ticketable offense. Wanna bet the insurance companies pushed that one?

Third, report it to the police (get a report filed) so that the description and VIN number are available to them.

Last, perhaps, if you live in the right area, odds of recovery using Lojack is pretty good. Might want to check into it. Alarms, statistically, don't get'er done.

Ohh... and it's not uncommon for thieves to take it to a suburban neighborhood and park it for a time, just in case it has lojack or some type of tracking. If no one shows up and takes it, then they come back when things are a bit cooler and haul it away. I don't know how long the window is before they haul it away, but if you have the time they may not have felt safe enough to drive it far until they were sure. Just a thought there. That's why prompt reporting helps, because you get patrols watching also.

Best wishes on getting through this and on with life.

Mark

I agree.
That bites!
Most folks report the vehicle gets found a couple of miles away within a day or so.

Local PD has started prowling the neighborhoods in the AM handing out $100 tickets for leaving an unattended motor vehicle running.
Why make a crooks job easier?

In addition to that, usually folks also leave all the keys on the ring so now the bad guy can just waltz in whenever he sees your not home.

I always lock it up when warming it up. I keep an extra key for that reason.

I have my remote on a separate keychain with my house keys. The truck key is with the motorcycle key and the gas cap key. I just lock it while its running.

Gotta love remote starters.

I'd love the local policeman to try to give me a ticket,
1-I hope he/she's in a good mood.
2-I'll say "hop in and try to drive off", I'll even unlock it for you,
pull out my set of keys and pop the doors open for them.

Then when they A-push on the brake, B-push on the go pedal, or C-put it into gear and the engine shuts off, I'll just
and either take the ticket, or have a good laugh with the officer.

Sorry about the stolen truck.

Theft of vechile is one reason, but these tickets being issued were driven by another (here we go again...) source: Emissions control. That's right, the Sierra club people are ticked over semi's sitting ideling and polluting all that air - and ask a trucker what he thinks about it! So it seems they are going for "equal opprotunity" and catching people in ther driveways as well. Ah, yes, if we only drove a Prius such waste would not be needed...

But I'm sorry to hear about this stolen truck. I also agree, if you (they) have reported it, you may want to take the insurance claim and look for a new rig. Someone else on here had one stolen, and lots of damage - including to the engine happened in a very short time. You can be sure they didn't take care of it like you would have!

Man sorry to hear that, lucky for your friend he didn't get a cite too as it is illegal to leave a vehicle unattended and running (even if locked) in Denver, I’ve got the plate # and your phone # in the truck, I’ll keep a eye out

There was an article on the news about this last nite, but they said NOTHING about it being illegal....just that it was not a good idea to leave it unlocked and unattended.

I have a remote start on my car, and I use it if it's cold. You can break into the car, but once you push the brake pedal to put it in gear (won't go into gear any other way) it kills the engine.

Thanks for the advice, stories, and extra eyes.

Truck has not been found yet (stolen approximately 14 days ago). I never thought about the "steal and leave-in-a-park" method to avoid getting caught with lo-jack. Good to know. I can start checking some local rural areas; however, one would think its highly likely the truck has been moved by now... but then again 6 years in a shed?

I hope this serves as a general education for those whom have never had anything stolen, and again for those who have.

Good info here!

I will post later on with another update. Thanks all.

Thank you! I would do the same for you or other members in a heartbeat.

Extra eyes help.
