Unhappy Stolen 2003 CTD!

Have a friend with (more like without) an '03 Black Quad-Cab, 2500, SLT, 4x4 CTD. He lives just south of Denver, CO. He recently moved from Texas so his truck still has texas plates on it. License Plate No. 8CL-Y78.

Pretty much stock truck except for the grille, I think it looks like the current Laramie Package grille.

It was idling in the driveway in the morning and left unattended for a short period of time, came out to go to work and it was gone. Happened last Tuesday (12-6-2005).

Any info on where your "stolen and recovered" truck has ended up would be very helpful. Any ideas on what else to do other than report it to insurance company would be great. If anyone ahppens to catch a visual of the truck please call me at 303-898-2227 (Cell Phone, my name is Eric).

Anyone else have a similar experience and what was the overall result?

Thanks in advance.

I try to start mine every morning just to get it warmed up also. I just go out and start it and then I have an extra remote with me and I lock the rig when I go back into the house. Unlock it from insidethe house on my way out the door and no problems.

Here in Colorado Springs, you WILL get a $75 ticket for letting your vehicle idle unattended. Police even patrol apartment complex parking lots (which is private property) and neighborhood streets early mornings looking for the teltale exhaust plume. Got a locked up car idling in your driveway? If it doesn't get stolen, you may find a $75 ticket on your windshield when you come back out.

Big expose on TV on how car thefts go up something like 300% when it gets cold enough that people have to warm up their cars and go back inside for another cup of coffee.

Just goes to show you- let's patrol the area and ticket the owner idling his car, instead of vigorously prosecuting the car thieves!

They're giving the ticket's around here too. I believe I'd have to say,,,,"Heck no my car wasn't running. What do you think, I want to get it stolen". All though I'm just as guilty as everyone else.

well it's pretty hard to have that defence when the cops find your truck and see that the steering column isn't ripped to shreds to hot wire it and possibly the keys hanging in the ign. Then you say I didn't give the theif the key?? they will wonder how they got it. The easiest way to get around this is to have a remote start installed $300.00 for a cheap one or $600.00 for a top of the line one like mine. I never have to go out to start my truck and it stays secure!!

I'm here in Colorado man, I'll keep my eye out for you!!! Chances are it's in a different state by now, but who knows might get lucky!?!?!?!

I heard even with remote start they will still give you a ticket, to them running is running..............I think it's complete BS but whatever......cops suck!!! Catch the bad guys instead of ticketing a guy who doesn't want to freeze his butt of in the morning!!

Anywhoo, good luck on finding the truck, like I said I'll keep my eyes peeled!!

to me it would be worth going to court if I got a ticket for running my truck WITH NO KEYS IN THE IGN!!!! There is no way a theif would get my truck. He would have to break my window and the remote start would shut down then he wouldn't even get the door open and the truck would be dead and the alarm going off! I would be chasing close behind with the shotgun aimed at his behind!!

The reason we write tickets for you all that leave your vehicles running is you waste our time taking reports that would not have to be taken if you would have kept an eye on your vehicle. You say go catch really bad guys, that is a good idea but we can't patrol the streets when we are getting 10 or more calls a morning about stolen cars and trucks that we have to respond to and listen to them tell us I only went inside for a second. Don't mean to be blunt just honest. I would love to be on the streets my whole shift be that rarely happens. Comes down to the old phrase "You all hate cops until you need one then we are your best friend."

Theres a real "We Serve & Protect " Attitude for ya. Whats written on the side of your cruiser? "You were robbed and its probably your fault?"

Please..."cant patrol the streets when you are getting 10 or more calls a morning". Cmon, be serious. How about taking a more pro-active approach here.
If I was an Investigator for an Insurance Co, I would have to wonder why 70 cars a week are being stolen in your community, and the Police cant seem to find the culprit(s)

Tell me the sense I catch from your writing is incorrect. If my car or truck gets stolen from the driveway, is your first assumption going to be that its my own fault. Will you feel I had my loss coming, and do nothing?
If this is the case, than only the first 4 words of your last sentence is correct.

If the keys were left in the ignition it is your fault in my personal opinion. But my professional opinion is you got victimized and I will do what I can to find your vehicle. As for the 10 a day I was just using an average number that is taken from stats around the country, but I have had days of 10 or more vehicle burglary calls although they are rare. But if you live in an urban environment of 100,000 people+ 10 is not that far off base for a day. and most often the vehicle is found in less then perfect condition. I am sorry if I offended you guys I was just relaying the justification my superiors used when they told us to enforce this ordinance and I'm just saying most vehicles that are sitting in a driveway running with the keys in it are an easy mark and most insurance companies will not pay if the keys were left in the car. As for the tickets I/we are just doing our jobs and taking orders from superiors. Do I write up every infraction I see "NO" I let alot slip by and have yet to write a ticket for a running unattended vehicle but they do get written some officers have no leway. Good lord I didn't think you all would bash on me for making a statement. I thought we were all supposed to be helpful to eachother, that's what this site is about i thought.

Those post dont represent the majority here. Some will never like law enforcement. I have a remote starter with my doors locked. It would take a citation to get me to stop this. My truck sits far from the street in my driveway. I dont ever remember doing this anywhere else but my drive.

Tell ya what, if you guys ever get a chance to head North, I mean really North , say Northern Alberta, BC, Yukon or Alaska it's a whole different head space leaving vehicles idle when it's dead winter and -40. Pull up to a bar or dinner and the whole lot is a smokin with idling trucks. Now god help the fella that decides to bust in because you usually lock the door with the key in it of course. People carry a spare key or the remote in their pocket. I asked once aren't you worried about someone stealing your truck. Right away they said, " Are you from the big city ? That doesn't happen here because if you steal a mans HORSE we deal with it bush style ". I didn't ask any further. Remember cowboy they hanged horse thieves once upon a time!
