stick vs auto

I was talkin to my buddy in the weight room today and he said that any auto will beat a stick any day. Assuming we are talking a drag and not pulling, same mods or about the same power, is that true? Is the gearing in sticks lower and just how quick do the auto shift compared to how fast you can shift a big truck like that?

He is right, auto will take a stick in a drag any day, at least with these trucks (assuming both are in the same power range). Its really hard to quickly shift the manual transmission these trucks have, they are made for pulling a load not tearing down the track. Also with an auto you can build boost easier than you can with a stick.

You don't lose boost between shifts with an auto.

I would say it's true with turbo diesels because with a manual you will lose more boost between shifts than you would with an auto.

Yeah, it is the unfortunate truth....

I will say that the manual trucks are a heck of a lot more fun to drive though!!!

Oh I love standard tannies. It's all I have driven up till my newest truck. When I up grade to a 3/4 ton from my 1/2 ton, i'm pretty sure i want to go to a stick. Sorry to say, but i'm pretty new to the diesel world and only know turbo's as far as cars go. Do diesels do anything like a blow off valve (BOV)?

Diesels have wastegate's stock, but a blow off valve(s) can be added. And auto's are definately faster. If sticks were just as fast, I would probably convert mine to a 5 speed, but I like racing too much

Can you do full throttle shifts with the manual trannies? You wouldn't lose too much boost that way.

Berner, not really. Load makes boost. Like puttin it in netural doesn't make as much as sayin puttin it in gear holdin the brake and then givin it fuel.

I would think you would probably lose less boost but ur still not gonna keep up with an auto and forget it if they have a lockup switch.

stock dodge auto vs stock dodge 5spd, the 5spd will win. But thats because the stock auto's have no power until lockup. Good auto vs. good 5spd, auto will win for sure.

I will never give up my 5sp, there is nothing like shifting through gears and letting that straight pipe sing

I wish I had bought a 5 speed but in my area when you see a use cummins on a car lot you better buy it or will be gone by the next day. In fact the truck I bought was traded in at 5 pm the night before I saw it and I was already the second person in line to buy it. The first guys loan fell through and I already had the check from the bank.
