stacks crossbox

Im lookin to finally do my 6" stacks and i wanted to fab my crossbox and everything before I get the chrome stacks, to spread my spending a little bit.

The problem i'm running into is the 6x3 (3/16" thick) rectangle tube steel...I've found it at a bigger local steel shop but they wanted just over 100 bucks for a 6 foot length!!

I'm not sure if that's a reasonable going price for that material, but it seems really high.

Just wanted to ask you guys if you used this material, where you got it from and how much you paid...
I have everything else i need, just this dang rectangle tube is trying to put a hurtin on my wallet...

is $100 too much for this material?

that sounds right. Steel is crazy now. i payed about 75 for my 4"x6" steel that was about 7 foot long a year or so ago. it was 1/4 inch thick.

yeah he said prices have been going up. I remember 2 years ago i could have gotten the same piece for like 60 bucks!!
Tomorrow i'm going to call around and try to find something cheaper, If not i'll try a scrapyard or something, but I wanted to find something by saturday so we'll see...

It sucks that their thinnest material (3/16")(.187") is that expensive! If I can find some 1/8" for cheaper I'd probably grab it, but i guess i gotta call around some more, or just get lucky and find a good sized scrap somewhere...

What should I use?

Smallest ive found around here is 3/16 (.187")

I'd prefer 1/8", but I can't imagine doing it or finding it in 1/16" material

Just get some plate steel, and weld up a box. Dosen't have to be bullet proof. Most people use diamond plate for looks.

Is the steel tube supposed to be a mount for the crossbox, or what?
