Scary.............?

I'm sorry if this comes out wrong to some, but reading some of the posts/threads and seeing some of the stuff in the member's galleries
scares the mess outta me..........
Not everyone is handy at vehicle repair and I appreciate the effort of trying, but some of ya's should not be doing the repairs by yourselves. There are a few on here who do a great job explaining things and helping others.
Unfortunately I sometimes resist helping some because I've read what they've done and can't believe why or how they did what they did. I don't want to entice/help somebody that just shouldn't be doing something on their own.
I don't wanna see someone get hurt or hurt somebody else doing something they shouldn't have started in the first place. Some things are beyond their skills and talents.......
Maybe I just asking ya's to think about what your into and if it's beyond your capabilty........please get someone to help you BEFORE you tackle the job.

I don't suppose there are much in the way of safety standards in that neck of the woods, huh?

I would agree with your sentiments. However, if the project is above your skill level, ask someone to assist you while you perform the work. That way you know it is done right and you learn how do it yourself. Next time you will be able to perform the service on your own, and then maybe you could be asked to assist someone else. Automotive work is not rocket science, but we all had to / have to learn sometime.

im just a youngin and i love wrenching on my own vehicle, i did all the bolt on parts in my ford lightning, and now on the dodge ive doen two sets of injectors, a clutch, turbo swap, and a few other maintenance items.

but if i cant do something i always seek the help of someone who can help, rather than do it halfway and leave something unfinished or dangerous

I think the scariest thing of them all is that some of these people probobly work on our trucks for a living. Or sell them.

I agree with his sentiment, some guys need to know their own limitations. I removed a post from a guy a couple years ago that he had done as a joke. The gist of it was that if you shorted a wrench across the battery teminals it would fix an issue.

The guy was only joking but I removed for fear that somebody might very possibly do it not knowing any better. The way he worded in a long drawn out manner describing each step was hilarious, but I could picture somebody not realizing it was a joke.

If you don't understand exactly what it is you are wanting to attempt on your truck, then come hang out with us at one of our chapter meets across the country. You will have all the help you could possibly ever need and meet some great people in the process.

Good information from some wonderful guys on these forums, but it is still up to you to know what you can or can not do on your own

I thought this site was all about " to thine own ability do you rise...," or fall, as the case may be.

I agree with a lot of what is said before this, but some folks are not about asking for advice, even when they would be better served. I see it on the job site all the time.

You can't make a wise man out of a mule.

No offence guys, but I'm not about to give examples or point members out.
If you spend some time and read with a little common sense through the posts/threads, I'm sure you see the examples for yourself.
I just wanted to give some safety advice out before someone gets hurt.
I honestly figured that you guys might take offence to what I said and FLAME back but it was said with good intentions and I appreciate the kind replies back. I agree very much Larry. There are some knowledgable members here that would go out of their way to help. All you have to do ask and apprecaite the info even if it is beyond what you may have thought you were capable of doing.

This would be a good opportunity to thank the adminstartors and webmasters for this great site and the effort they put into it. So I guess I'll start.........

Thank-you Admin and Webmasters and WE DO appreciate what you've accomplished on this site. Here's a toast to DTR.....

My dad and me do basically all the work on the vechicals just short of tearing a auto trans(the insides scare me.. ) apart or doing the inspection. My dad grew up on a farm where his dad's motto was "if it is broke we gonna fix it and if we can't fix it then we sell it",I lived on the same farm up until last year when we moved and my dad lived by the same motto. Its just alot cheaper to go buy the good parts to do the job then pay a mechanic to buy cheap parts and charge out the wazoo for it.
Its the whole reason i am going to school to become a Diesel Mechanic and get my inspection Lic.

96_12V--- great website, I just spent a half hour going through the photo archives and some of that stuff is just so scary its funny!

I am a mechanical idiot... I havent done a whole lot on my truck simply because I wouldnt know how to fix anything I might break or mess up in the process.
Knowing your limitations is one of the first important lessons in life in any thing we do. Hopefully anyone who isnt comfortable with their knowledge or ability to do something properly will seek help rather than seek medical attention.

GOOD THREAD!!
