i have been thinking about running off road fuel in my truck but am worried about the fines that are possibly involved. i have been told it's a $10,000 fine is this true?

 

just check state by state, all are diffrent

 

typically expensive enough to cause you not to run it. do a search on red diesel on this site..... you will find more information than you ever wanted to know.....

 

the fuel will be the same quality as regular road diesel [and it isn't worse, look at all the off road equipment with the same engines as road vehicles...] just the color is there and no taxes on it....

it's your nads in their vice if you get caught running it though... the fines will eliminate any savings you could have had by 10x...

and if you are getting low quality off road fuel, it's time to find another fuel supplier

[and some fuel suppliers, if you buy enough quantity, you can get off road fuel uncolored... but we are talking +100,000's gallons]

 

I've never heard of fuel being checked in a pickup but there's always the chance somebody could report you .

 

........and it takes several tankfulls of on-road fuel to clean all the dye out of the fuel system.

I know someone that has never used onroad diesel since he bought his truck in 99 i dont think they check pickups very often. I heard rumors they check at big farm conventions and stuff like scheids diesel extravanganza. Ive ran off road when funds where tight i think its a better fuel.

 

cops like to pick on the guys that have farm tags, fuel tanks in bed, etc etc... unless you get pulled over for speeding and the cop just decides to pull the stick out then your screwed. my advice... don't do it. pretty HEFTY fines...

 

When I had my VP replaced, the receipt from the shop (not a dealer) said not to use red dyed diesel fuel, that it would cause premature pump damage.

It should have read "Would cause premature WALLET damage"

 

Not sure on that one, don't they use the VP44 in some 200+ H.P John Deere applications?

That would sure prove your reciept to be False. Farmers don't usually care to pay the extra loot for road tax.
My opinion is that it is playing with fire, why take the risk? If your were going to save the fine amount in fuel price every month or so, I would see your point?!
Anyone that is attempting this, I would suggest putting the difference in a cookie jar so when you get popped your wife can bail you out.

 

The fines are FAT and they can dip your tank anytime, for any reason. When would they do this? Well here in Wheaton, the police have started setting up "seatbelt checks" and they simply put out a bunch of cones and have you drive through them, every so often they pick out a vechile (every fourth or fifth one, I believe) and have you pull into a vacant parking lot. What they do with you then is up to them. They check your plates, your insurance, your registration and liscense, and they can also dip your tank. It can happen at anytime on any day and by the time you realize what's going on, it's too late. You can't pull out of the line, and if you try, you will certanily be checked out as that draws suspicion.

You have something intended to be used all of you life. It's called a conscience. If it's bothered by your actions, it's quite likely it's a good idea to obey it. If you willingly know something is illegal and yet engage in it, it's likely to creep up and make you sweat hard when you think about it.

96_12V, Glad I don't live near you. Round here most of the Law Enforcement still needs that little thing called "probable cause". We are now subject to (in MD) night vision peering into our vehicles at night for seat belt checks. Never ever heard of any road tax issues in these parts though.

 

One of our shop guys used to run Hotshot, got his tank dipped everytime he met a cop.

my $.02, if you want to do it, get an auxillary tank and run it in parrallel with the stock tank. both your suction and return lines are switched between the tank. you run some extra cost because you need a pusher pump in the aux tank instead of gravity feed to the main tank. you also have to filter it, and have a bigger valve block to switch between the tanks.
