Racing a 05 Hemi
Racing a 05 Hemi
I let my PSD buddy drive my truck with my new mods yesterday, and he was amazed. He wants me to race his brother's 05 1500 hemi. Do you all think there's a chance I could at least hang with it, once I'm out of first gear the truck really scoots. Haven't really raced anyone before, other than messing around in traffic. I haven't got a clue what my actual HP or torque is, my 1/4 mile time or speed, anything. The truck is night and day different from stock though.
What is your axle gear ratio? If its 3.54, you will blow his doors off. I believe those hemi's only run a mid to high 15 in the 1/4. Im sure with all your mods you could get down in the high 14's. If you have 4.10, im not real sure. It will be close.
My truck has no problem at all smokin a hemi. I'd say that if you have 3.54's you'd probably even take me.

That's good to know, I have 3.54's. Oh, this will be great, I didn't think I'd have too much of a chance, I haven't ridden in a hemi. A bunch of people will watch this one, no one will be expecting me to beat him. I'd be surprised myself. I guess I'll just build up like 5 psi and launch? I've got a billet input, but not the output.
Oh well since you have the 3.54's you have no worries. Boost launch that thing and give her hell. IMHO, the hemi's are way overrated. I've ridden in them and I was expecting it to pin my ears back because of all the hype of how mean they are and I wasn't impressed at all. That Chevrolet 1/2 4x4 with the vortec max 345hp 6.0(same power as hemi) will walk all over a hemi. The odd's are in the hemi's favor since they have a 5-spd auto and 3.92 gears in them. I just don't see what all the hype is about when it comes to those hemi trucks. Anyway, back on subject, you won't have any problems leaving him in the smoke.
If you look at my sig you can see what the wife and I drive. Her truck is not faster than mine as we happen to meet up coming home from work one day a couple of weeks ago and from a stop light to 70 mph I was 2 truck lenghts in front of her. Her truck does have the 20" wheels and tires and I do think that hurts the Hemi. I don't know what this guys brother has for mods on his 05 but if he has 17" tires and a few performance mods it could be a close one.

After four bone stock Cummins powered Rams and now a Hemi powered duplicate of my '03 Cummins Ram, I can say without doubt the Hemi powered Ram will easily outrun and out tow a stock 250hp/460ft/lb Cummins Ram. But it's not by a far enough margin that a programmer on the 24v or mechanical mods to the 12v won't easily turn that around. The Cummins has the potential for obsene power output. The Hemi is pretty much what you get out of the box. Even with mods, there's not much increase to be had. Both engines live up to the advertising hype if you diagnose the advertisements for what they are. Niether engine lives up to the hype of internet forums. The stock Hemi will not pin your ears back nor will the stock Cummins tow 14k lbs 70mph up a 7% grade in O/D. But in reality they both do a great job running empty or towing up to their ratings.
I have some real data here on the hemi. My wife has an '05 2wd quadcab shortbed with the bling bling wheels and 3.92's. It has run a 15.58 in the 1/4. It is STONE stock, as in absolutely nothing done to it but oil changes.
A good friend of mine has another '05 hemi. It's a standard cab shortbed 2wd, with the 17" wheels and 3.55's. Stock except for removing the tailgate (I know, I know), air filter and spare tire, it went 14.9-something. This is on the original tires and everything. No programmer or anything.
The hemi is an excellent engine by just about all objective standards-it has good power output for its size, it gets good mileage when not put in a 5200 lb truck for which it's poorly suited in the first place, and the cylinder head flow numbers stock are VERY good. The biggest bottleneck in the stock hemi is the camshaft. This is shown by the really big increases obtained when even a mild performance cam is installed. Hell, the stock 6.1 liter cam makes a ton of difference in a 5.7.
Wanna feel what the hemi should be like-drive a car with the 5.7 in it. Bone stock magnums, chargers, and 300's routinely run mid-low 14's with the hemi. They're not exactly light, and they can return some really good fuel economy for their size when driven right.
Anyway, enough preaching about the hemi. I still prefer the cummins, as evidenced by the fact that I sold my '05 magnum with 3800 miles on it when I got my '98 dually and started bombing it.

His truck is a crew cab, and is completely stock. He does have the 19 or whatever inch big bling rims, we give him a lot of grief over those. Can't wait to run them. I've been considering switching from the V5 to a smarty, maybe I will before then if it will help a lot.

With the mods in my sig
i have blown away several hemis in town, they have nothing on the top end, and im shiftin gears. They are decently quick 0-60 tho but when my timing kicks in im still hangin with them then i just blow em away. Oh and FYI, im at a measly 350 rwhp... as we speak, so dont be intimidated.. They cant be over 275 rwhp on the dyno... least i think...

A while back I raced an 04 I believe 4 door 2wd hemi w/ hypertech chip, headers, exhaust and intake. My mods were Jammer 4s, Drag comp, Intake and exhaust. At that time I was also rollin 8 inches of lift on 37s with a stock tranny and SMOKED him. You should have much fun.

Here's a fast Hemi Ram that'll give you some competition. I forgot about nitrous...
