Question for the experts??????

Someone who I think knows a lot less than they try to convince me of, told me something I think is way off in left field. But because I will readly admit that I don't know everything I go to the experts....

They told me this; That the new Duramax doesn't have glow plugs and no matter what the temp you just turn the key and crank it up......

I guess I'm old school and always turn the key and wait 10-15 sec to allow time for glow plugs even though my 06 glow plugs don't come on unless its below XX degrees......

Someone please set me staight...... Do new Duramax have glow plugs? If not how do they get around them......

Thanks....

yep, they definetly know less than you, because the duramax most certainly has glow plugs. The 2006+ duramax's also have an intake grid heater to supplement the glow plugs.

Yes, the dmax glow plugs are fast heating, so 90% of the time you dont even see the 'pigtail' light on the dash when you turn the key on. Even in -26* when my truck had been sitting for 2 days I turned the key on and the glow plug light was on for less than 4 seconds and then it started right up. Didnt sound happy for a minute or two, but it started up and stayed running. This is WITHOUT being plugged in too.

Both the cummins and duramax's are pretty good in the cold. Forget starting a 7.3 or 6.0 powerstroke when its below zero.

Yeah, the HEUI doesn't like cold temps because they tend to thicken the oil.

With the Ford setup, thick oil=unhappy injectors and engine.

The question I have is will the new Dmax start without the glow plugs working or is it like the older 6.2/6.5 and refuse to start without plugs?

The cummins isb means inline small block i believe and it is the 5.9l and 6.7l family of engines.

I know how a ctd CAN start with the grid heater plugged in...I honestly dont see why a duramax would be any different. Similar compression ratio, direct injection etc... (compared to the ctd)

6.2/6.5 were junk and indirect injection (among other things) and had a lot of other things that would make them impossible to start without glow plugs.

Joe, if you have a Dodge truck, you don't have glow plugs but rather a grid heater instead.

Ben thanks for your quick and friendly responses on the Chevy stuff, guys like you prove that it isn't all about the logo around here. I wish all the Dodge, Chevy and Ford guys understood that as well as you do.
