painting a turbo

Howdy,
I'm going to set about rebuilding a turbo (a Schwitzer 3LM I mentioned in an earlier post) and have a few questions. When I have it apart, I plan to clean it thoroughly and then paint the compressor housing (outside only I guess). What of the turbine side? Should I just leave it bare or paint it and let it burn off? Is there any coating that is worthile to put on it? Gunblue (just a crazy idea)?

I suppose you could paint it with high temp header paint. White would look pretty good. I seem to remember a graphite paint that some use. It doesn't hurt a thing to just leave it "natural". Don't paint the inside of either the turbo or compressor. It's made to be unpainted.

VHT is good for 1300-1400 degrees and comes in a variety of colors.

If you want to pay some fairly serious $$$$ for something that will last, check out Jet-Hot coatings.

Go to NAPA and look for the aerosol can of Dry Graphite Film (DGF-123 brand)with NAPA's label.
Spray a liberal coating on the cleaned cast iron part. It dries almost instantaneously and sticks real well. It'll stand the heat and it looks like grey cast iron. I did it to the top of my manifold when I put my EGT probe in and it still looks good considering I didn't get it all that clean before I sprayed it.

That's a link to the VHT paint I was talking about. You should be able to buy it off the shelf though. What happened to the guy on here about a year or so back that was doing the ceramic coating?

Wow, the price sure is right on that VHT stuff! Any one have any tips on where I'll be able to find it on the shelf? If not, i'll look into getting some of that dry graphite coating from NAPA. Thanks for the input fellas!

One more thing, is that VHT stuff something that has to be baked on? I understand some of those coatings require you to bake whatever it is you've painted for a couple of hours.

Theres the instructions. They do recommend that you get it up to temp. You could bake it or you could probably just drive the truck gently around town.
I haven't used that stuff for about 10 years or so but I was very impressed with it. Matter of fact maybe I should do my exhaust manifold and turbo next time I have it apart.
