OT...volkswagon speed sensor

I know this isn't a Dodge issue but my wifes lil'sis is having a problem with her 02 Jetta TDI and I've been volunteered to fix it for her.
It seems that her check engine light has been on for a while but she's had no problems until now.
The RPMs run really high before it shifts and will not go into O/D.
I put the code reader on it and got a speed sensor code twice and another code that indicated "improper gear ratio". I'm assuming the later is because it won't shift into O/D.
My guess is that it has 2 speed sensors and both have crapped out causing the symptoms as well as the 2 codes.
So my question are
Does anyone know where these speed sensors are located.
AND
Could the problem be something else and if so what might it be?

You Should Only Have One Sensor Unless The Two Codes Show Diffent Code Numbers But Anyway The Sensor Would Be Eather At The Ip Or Pedal Under The Dash......just A Shot In The Dark

I've been looking there and have yet to find a solution.

On rereading for detail, it sounds like bands or clutches are slipping REALLY bad. That my explain the code for 'improper gear ratio'.

How's the trans fluid? i.e. level, condition, last changed?

Those years had a TC, if I remember correctly. The TC may not be locking up.

Could also be the main pump. Not enough fluid pressure to actuate bands/clutches/TC could be slipping until something REALLY broke.

On edit...I think the computer compares engine rpm vs. trans output rpm & compares it against pre-programmed gear ratios to determine if something is slipping.

Well according to the trans guy that installed my Goerand brothers tranny the improper gear ratio code is because the trans is getting or looking for the shift command but the speed sensor is failing to give the correct signal. His explanation makes more sense than my memory of what he said but that's the gist of it.
I've ordered a new speed sensor.....we'll see if that fixes it.

Have you asked on tdiclub? People there are as knowledgable and helpful as anywhere, although they are more focused on the engine. If you don't want to bother registering I could proxy a post if you want.

Also might be worth checking if there's a recommended TDI mechanic in the area.

Yea I've posted my questions there. I'm getting some responses trickling in.

It's fixed!!
It was a bad output speed sensor.
Runs like a champ now.
After doing some reading on the TDI site I may have to get me one of those little jewels. A few mods will get some zippy torque and still see at or near 50mpg on the highway.
Could be a fun little go kart!!

WOW! I can't believe I missed this one!

Yours is the 1st I've heard of, that has a problem with a speed sensor. We have lots of problems with speed sensors on the 2.0 gasser's. If the problem returns let me know and I'll research it for your! I work a V-Dub dealer.

Well when I called the dealership parts guy and told him what the code was on this car he seemed to know exactly what to order. May have just been a lucky guess though.
I talked to the sister in law this morning and the check engine light is back on but the car is shifting and running fine.
I'll put the code reader on it later today to see what this is.
